Getting ready to change tires out and would like to know who has put new bigger tires on without modifications. I actually planned on the lift kit and the whole 9 yards - but got luckier and have a new baby on the way.



Needless to say - only have the cash to do this tire thing once - without tossing $$$ into modifications.



Looking for taller and wider on a stock rim. Wider is optional. Kids in vehicle - safety cannot be ignored - don't need any bump or high speed rubbing.

Lift Kit

Jeff - will the lift kit upset the balance of the truck when hauling? I 've read some posts in the past that indicated that the truck would look as it it was overloaded when hauling heavy loads / traliers.

More than likely. I have a leveling kit on mine, but I haven't hauled anything in the bed and the heaviest trailer was only around 5000-6000 pounds. If you are concerned about that kind of thing, airbags in the rear will prevent that.
 
A friend of mine has a bone stock 2500 Hemi with 285/70/17 Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs. No rubbing at all. Ever.

Impact on braking

Had another thought - what about the impact on braking. I thought I read once that there was some type of valve that distributes the amount of braking that can be upset by leveling the truck - it it true? How do you address that new problem?

Thats on old school stuff, doesn't apply the the electronic ABS on these.

:-laf :-laf Oh !! Well that too I guess cuz when you started driving some 19 years ago in 1986 thats what Fords were using was a valve on the rear end reducing brake fluid flow when the nose dives down during braking.
 
I have 315/70 R 17's. The first set I got 45,000 miles out of. Just put on the second set. Only minor rubbing due to the fact that my new wheels have at different offset. Payed under $650 installed. Gotta love those BFG's.

Does anyone know how much taller/wider 315's are than 285 or 265? thanks, doc

You can work it out. 315 refers to the treadwidth in millimeters, so a 315 is 30mm (1. 2") wider at the tread than a 285 and 50mm (2") wider than a 265.



The aspect ratio tells us how much taller. A 265/70/17 tire has a sidewall height that is 70% of the tread width, or 185. 5mm (7. 3"). Then, to get total tire height: 2(7. 3)+17 = 31. 6" (the "17" is the wheel diameter).



Similarly, a 285/70/17 is 32. 8" in diameter and a 315/70/17 is 34. 4" in diameter. These values are for a tire with no load... a real tire would "squish" down a bit and be of slightly smaller effective diameter. But it is meaningful to compare the relative differences:



A 315/70/17 is 8% larger diameter than a 265/70/17 and 4. 7% larger diameter than a 285/70/17... if I haven't screwed up the math. ;)

First let me say how glad I am TDR is for expressing opinions, advice, and the occasional nonsense. Therefore, I will take the liberty to throw in my . 02 - and you can decide which category to stow it in. :)

IMHOPutting the biggest fattest tires on may not be the best choice because of wear and tear on suspension and steering components (reading the ball joint/ujoint threads should give one pause) or for safety. Doesn't say where you are from but if you are planning on driving or stopping on slick roads you will not find the phatty blings to your advantage. However, if you plan on bombing off through the Baja sands dodging the boojam trees - go for it.
 
The BFG is 34. 0" on the ground with the truck on it. I just measured. Mine didn't rub at all when I put them on before my suspension. If I wasn't doing any suspension on the front, I'd have gone with the 295/70's Matt was talking about earlier.
