What's The Best Excuse To Get Out Off Work?

Got a job, sort of......

Based upon 2002 sales:

Walmart $3. 3 Billion

Cabela's $1. 1 Billion

Bass Pro $880 Million

Gander Mtn. $357 Million

Sports Authority $250 Million

REI $200 Million

Interesting!!!!!!!

And all are expanding rapidly!!

Amazing Wal-Mart is the biggest since the outdoor section of the store is so small at the Super Wal-Mart here. Seems like it would be such a small part of their business.

I work less than 2 miles from Bass Pro's main store. Comes in real handy. They also have an outlet store with bargains galore in it right next door. I've had no problems with them beating walmart on any advertised item. Especially guns. They get quite a bit of my money every year. John Morris has a done a bunch for the surrounding communities in this area also.

That is what I was thinking as I read the figures in a newspaper article. Between Cabela's (been to several of their smaller!!! stores) and Basspro (was amazed when I went to their main store also!!!) and have one of the new larger Gander Mtn stores nearby, that how their business is totally hunt/fish/camp that the largest is only 1/3 $ of Walmart, where the sporting goods is such a small part of the total store square footage.

Guess even the big boys (relatively speaking) have to consider the 800# gorilla of retail!!!

Wonder what the 2003 figures show as Cabela's. Bass Pro, Gander Mtn, have been expanding heavily (of course so has Walmart?)

I guess since Wal-Mart is everywhere, they get more exposure. It's definately more convenient if you need something to go to Wal-Mart and pick it up with a bunch of other non sporting goods related items.

I remember making one trip a year to LL Bean up in Maine on the way to our yearly fishing trip at Nesowadnehunk Lake in Baxter State Park (wonder if anyone on this board has been there before!?). It was kind of an event we looked forward to. This was in the days when mail order wasn't as popular.

Every other month, we'd make a trip up to the Kittery Trading Post and just look around. They have an entire floor pretty much dedicated to shooting sports. I was like a kid in a candy store.

Another way to look at it..... Walmart has low-end sporting goods for the most part, for the beginner hunter, fisherperson and camper, which IMO is the vast majority of the public.

The others, Bass Pro, Cabelas, and Gander Mountain, cater to more of the high end, more experienced sportsman,(more choices, better quality items) and is much less of the overall market. (Note: you can't even get a $100 Jack-a-lope at Wal-mart, LOL)

How many Wal-Marts are in the country compared to the other stores? When I worked for Gander, we were mainly in the Mid-West with just a few stores out East.

Rob, we sold the "Jack-O-Lopes" for $49. 99.
