The 3500, the trailer, and the toys...

Couple of questions on trailer sway

This morning, at 6:00 AM, I got to pull my biggest load yet. The load was one of my tractor trailers. The u-joint strap on the front drive failed and it broke down about 2 miles from my shop. So I said, lets just pull it with the Ram. The Tractor trailer was empty, but still weighs 33,000 empty. The Ram pulled it with ease. My driver couldn't believe it. Now he is a believer.

safety notes: The unit was pulled with 1/2" grade 70 chain doubled over. The unit was left idling, and the driver and I communicated by nextel 2- way for braking needs. (I didn't want a tractor trailer that was 10 ft. from the Rams bumper running into me) there also was minimal traffic at this time of the morning.

Anyways, I love the pulling power of the ram.

Doesn't surprise me at all. :D

Then your driver would really be impressed with my underpowered Ford with a 6. 9L. I did the same thing with it. The Mack had a blown turbo. Didn't have to go as far either. Did this before I had the Ram.

Per the Ford ad, how many refrigerators would that be? I wish there had been a truck like yours back when I was hauling grain and equipment. I had a 78 W150 440 automatic that I pulled a triaxle gooseneck with for thousands of miles. My heaviest gross was 32500# with 350 bushels of wheat. I got a whopping six miles to the gallon with it. I know the weight police will pounce, but I towed the load in low range at 45-50 mph and the trailer would stop the truck right now!

That was the best truck I ever had until these 12V Cummins. Maybe one day a Gen 3, they are almost too smooth for a truck.

This doesn't surprise me, especially with a strong diesel pickup. We had a guy on a Honda Valkyrie motorcycle pull a 6000# pickup up a 3% grade one time. Good thing it doesn't have a temperature gauge!

I love the chevy commercial where the transporter runs out of fuel and the 1/2 ton comes along and tows it down the road.

How much air does the brake tank hold on that thing anyway? :-laf

Now what you need to do is pull it with a load on it. That would have your driver running down to the local dealer.

Hey, did you guys read the article in the last issue of TDR magazine ?? It's on page 62, and it's called "Western style turbodiesel antics" written by Brad Nelson. He's telling about the time he pulled a loaded Freightliner home after it broke down. Really good article. :) Those diesel pickups can really pull!

pull started the steel hauler down the road he had 90,000 on, had to put my 2500 gasser with plow bracket between us to pull down on my truck for traction.
