Does anyone know what is the biggest tire I can fit on my stock 16x6. 5" rim??? I currently have a 265 on there and would like to fill up the well better without having to buy new rims. Dave Fritz's ram page shows someone put on a Thornbird 33x11. 50x16 on a stock '99 (6. 5")rim??? Any suggestions? :)

I had 285/75's before, and I was not very pleased with the way they were wearing... They started crowning and it really ruined the life of them (25K miles). The 255/85's I have now seem to be wearing well. Although I really did like the looks of the 285's...

I've got 295 BF Goodrich A/T 's on mine and they are wearing fine. I wish I would have went with the 305's they look a little tougher

No offense to anyone but can we get back to the original question about what people have fit on a stock 6. 5" wheel. I doubt that 295's were used on a 6. 5";)

tires.....

just put on 285-75-16 bfg at ko's on stock 6. 5 rims.

so far so good. the only thing you have to watch is

the psi. you will run less to get a good tread contact.

right now i'm running 47 in the front and 32 in the back.

good luck!

Challenger ,

Did I not understand the question ?

Didn't you ask what the biggest tire has been fit on a stock rim?

My rims are stock and I have 295's on them:confused:

cwarner - I believe the 2001's have wider rims on them. I've been running 285/75R16 BFG AT KO's on my stock 6. 5" rims for 80,000 miles. I got 45,000 miles out of my first set and that was with several trips to the drag strip (with burnouts). They wore straight across the tread no problem. This set looks like it'll last about 55,000 miles. I run 55 psi in the fronts and 45 in the rears unloaded. Great tires - I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Tire and Rim Association Book

Challenger,

This is according to the 2000 Tire and Rim Association Year Book. The tire sizes *recommended* for a 6 1/2 inch wheel are anything from a 205/70R14 to 255/85R16. It also lists from 27x8. 50R14LT to 33x9. 50R15LT. I used those only to illustrate tire width for that width wheel. Some of the more recent sizes are not shown, but it looks like basically 205 - 255. Just telling you what the pros recommend, not what is possible. I'm sure there are lots of folks with good tire experiences outside of these ranges (including me with my Jeep!)

Hope that helps...

Thanks all who replied!!:D This was the info I was looking for. Looks like 285's wont be a problem on my 6. 5"

Steve St. Laurent... . you are right, stock rims got bigger I believe in 2000 or 2001.

cwarner... . what year is your truck? That might be why you can get a 295 on your stocker. :)

Challenger,

I have 295 75's on my truck. I previously had 255 85's. They were an off brand and lasted me 10k. . not good. I've had the 295's (BFG AT KO's) for 15k and they're wearing fine. You shouldn't have any problems with the 285's.

Ive had Dunlop 255/85-16s on my 16. 5 wheels, got almost 40,000 miles out of them, then went too 285/75-16 Bridgstone A/Ts got well over 55,000 miles past the warranty. They are a hard tire and ride a little rough, but wear good. Now Ive got 285/75-16 Cooper Discover A/Ts, got around 28,000 on them now and they still have 85% tread left , and ride great. I wanted Michilins but they don't make a 285, just the 265s as the biggest, so I went with Cooper. They come with a 60,000 mile warranty, plus they have nice deep tread. Try some:cool:

The "ideal" rim width for any tire is the same as the tread width. This means that for a 6. 5" rim, the "ideal" tire would have a tread width of 6. 5". This can, and is often, deviated from. If the rim is wider, the tread will tend to cup (more load on outside of tread), and from an off-roader's standpoint will leave the wheel vulnerable. If the rim is narrower, the tread will tend to bow (more load on center of tread), and from an off-roader's standpoint will help to protect the wheels.

All tire manufactures will provide a "recommended" wheel size for their tires. For instance, the TSLs on my Sami have a tread width of 10", but the InterCo recommends an 8" wheel. The MT/Rs on my Ram have a tread width of 8. 5". Goodyear recommends wheels widths of 8" - 10". Technically, the stock 8" rims are barely wide enough for these tires.

All that being said, the largest tire I would put on the stock 6. 5" rim would be a 265/85, provided I could find one with the appropriate load rating. Most, if not all 265s would have a recommended minimum rim width of 7", but 85 profile should be tall enough to work reasonably well on a 6. 5" rim. "Technically" the biggest you should use would be a 255/85.
