Things to Ponder

I've been thinking about this for a while and I am stumped. I ride a 96' shadow 1100, I average around 50mpg locally and when I haul down the freeway at 80 or 85 it drops to 40 mpg give or take a little. My brother has a car that he averages 35-38 mpg locally and on the freeway gets a hair better. why does mine drop so badly and his increases a little? my truck doesnt change more than 1-2 mpg going from city to hyway driving (hyway is better than city driving. ) city driving my truck gets a consistant 16 mpg and 17-18 mpg on the freeway running between 75 and 80 mph.

The other thing that stumps me is there are several bikes in the 120-140 hp range that get less than 30 mpg (actually they are closer to 25 mpg), my friends 03' dodge cummins, dynoed at 350hp to the rear wheels and he gets 17-19mpg hyway. the truck weighs around 8500 lbs, 19" wheels, 4x4, and several items that add wind resistance v. the bikes which weigh around 600 lbs and have way less wind restisance and rolling friction. what gives, are these bike engines that ineffiecient as opposed to car engines and our cummins engines?

torque VS. horsepower, bikes have no torque but scream on the top end. besides ,did you buy the bike for mileage? most folks dont care, as opposed to mopeds that get over 100mpg!!

Believe it or not bikes are not very aerodynamic. The coefficient of drag for a 1997 Dodge 3500 is . 48 . A Kawasaki ZX12 has a CD of . 603 - a Suzuki Hayabusa (possible the most aerodynamic bike out there) has a CD of . 561. You also have to take into account the state of tune for those engines. Take a current liter bike which is making around 170 hp/liter . Now take a 5. 9 liter Cummins making 350 hp - that's 59. 32 hp/liter. The bike is much higher strung to make that kind of power which also makes it less efficient.

Well, I am at 108hp (factory number) and get between 40 and 50 most tanks. I have a relatively high amount of torque and don't have to hang in the high revs for normal driving. With a large fuel tank a fill up with 250 miles give or take a few on a tank. But then again like mentioned earlier, I didn't really buy it for the economy!

my v-twin tachs out @ 6500rpm, and hauling down the interstate maybe a bit over 3000rpm. IIRC my shadow puts out 68hp and 76lbs of torque, although I dont know at what rpms. Its been a while since I read the manual. But basically what your saying is my "rpm sweet spot" is at about 55-60mph then coupled with a heck of a lot less wind resistance at 60mph as opposed to 80 mph?

could you explain that a little more to me? are you saying that the truck is only a little worse than the bike? And a car is likely to be much more areodynamic than any of the above, hence the reason the vw tdi's can hit close to 50 mpg. Of course, not forgetting to figure in the diesels effieciency?

Edit:

I just reread steve's post, I think I read it wrong the first time. Are you actually saying that the truck has better areodynamics than the bikes?

Yes, the truck has better aerodynamics than the bikes. Now there is more total drag on the truck because it has a much greater frontal area. A CD of 1. 0 would be like a flat board going through the air and a CD of 0 would be zero resistance.

Oh, ok I think I get it. :cool:

M,

Your Shadow has a 4-speed transmission. The later models with the 5-speed transmission were a bit more economic. Not much though.

My last bike that I actually owned was a 1986 Nighthawk S. In stock trim it will get 35-45 mpg. I talked my wife into buying it on the premise that it would be more economical. After I got through hopping it up it would get @ 28-30mpg. :eek: Gas (93 octane especially!) was higher than diesel at the time, so after the low fuel economy, insurance and tags and tire costs, it wasn't much, if any, more economical than my truck and it wasn't as hot in the summer, cold in the winter, and wet when it was raining as the truck, so it went away. :{

thanks steve. :cool:

where can I find more specific lists, say for other trucks like a first gen dodge?
