Almost became a statistic, fortunatly the 99 brakes worked when called upon!

There we were, 20 miles from the end of our crosscountry drive. I turn a corner on RT 200 in Montana and come face to face with a silver haired female devil driving a nice caddy in my lane. Semi to her right and a guardrail next to him. Guardrail on my side and no place to go.

Once the travel tired brain processed the danger in front of me, the panic braking began along with a few fleeting thoughts of 'oh I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER!!'

Well, thanks to effective brakes, I made friends with a small gap in the guardrail. If I had been driving a dually it would have been shy at least a wheel when the miserable &itch passed me. Driving my wife's suburban we would have had our vacation terminated.

Well, the green monster earned itself a few more brownie points!! And the fresh air of vacation is just a little bit nicer... .

It is kind of ironic that I was able to bruise my chest on the seatbelt from just panic braking.

Had the brakes checked by a dealer in Great Falls MT. since we heard metalic screatching. OK and nice dealer with many ETH 6 speeds on the lot.

Lucky You! My 4W ABS locks the front brakes tighter then a nuns ... (never mind).

Seriously, I'll post the pics. A 40 foot plus front wheels skid from the ABS. Flat spotted so bad I had to rotate the tires. The skid marks are still on that main street one month after the fact. Took pictures so when the dealer tells me there's nothing wrong I can show him.

The only question is: at 54000 miles is the ABS under warranty if you don't have an extended? I thing the ABS is under warranty for quite a while regardless of other warranty (it's a federal thing)?

No optional ABS on this rig, guess that is a blessing.

Yep, no ABS is a blessing. With no ABS you know how the truck will react and drive accordingly. With ABS it reacts different every time -- on bumps, no brakes -- on dry pavement, sometimes lock, sometimes work -- on gravel or dirt, most always lock but sometimes not. With ABS you just never know. Must be why accident rates are HIGHER with ABS -- and I DO drive them 'correctly'. No pumping. Push it and hold it down. What happens after that is the perpetual mystery.

(btw: it's not just a Dodge thing, it's ABS in general)

If you've been on the boards a while you've seen me harp on this before. Oh well. Pissy mood today I guess.

Glad you came out okay David. Sounds like a good piece of driving and a little bit of luck. So, did the little ole lady even stop to see if you were okay?

If she was looking forward she would have seen the 4 hand salute from my wife and I as she passed close aboard.

Clutch is a lost cause, PE did it in.

Glacier is wonderful, a bit of construction, but it is summer time, correct?

Thought I would finish this trip and use the same thread rather than start another one:

Home from 2 wks on vacation.
6K on the truck, avg about 18. 5 mpg.
Outbound from VT to MT via Chicago, Inbound via MICH and Canada.

Still love the truck, PE is a blast, especially when passing on the TransCanadaRT17. I start to pass, reach down and hit the 'ON' button for a burst of power. (once spooled up, the clutch seems ok for the added load)

Now to start plucking bugs from the front end. YUK... .

I did put a simple door screen over the radiator, so it is not packed too bad.

Picked up a few nicks in the windshield from all the lovely construction sites.

I highly recommend 'Road to the Sun' in Glacier. FYI: nothing over 21 feet!!!

back to the grind. home today and back on the airplane for work tomorrow evening. Phoenix and Camas WA.

David, glad you enjoyed the trip sans the near head-on. Did you get a chance to do any Powerstroke mashing on your travels? I figured what with the PE and a little influence from HVAC there would be no way you could resist...

I see your coming through Phoenix. It is absolutely hotter than h*ll out here now so hopefully your hotel has a pool!!

Lived there a few years ago. Just loved it when the new Grand Am's Air Cond. would cut out at the traffic lights because it was too hot for it... . ahhhh yes. .
