Alot of fillin sations in my hometown are goin to biodiesel. Is it safe to run in a 08 6. 7? Is it safe to mix woth regular fuel? Any advantages to it?

I've run used veggie oil (up to 50%) in my 6. 7 ever since I bought it in 2010. The local Murphys stores say they are using up to 10% biodiesel. I put it in and keep on truckin!

First few tanks of the BioDiesel blend will "clean out your system" so plan on changing the fuel filters a few times. But after that life is good. I've run my 05 on B100 for a few years with the only problem being gelled fuel in the winter. I log my Mpg the long hand method (real miles divided by real gallons) form day one with this, well all my trucks. I've found that running a 20%-50% Blend will give the best Mpg day in and day out. I don' really have a reason why but it is better than 100% diesel and deff better than 100% Bio. The National BioDiesel org has done extensive testing and they found that a blend of 5% BioDiesel helps the Catalyst light off at a lower temp. . Their findings showed that it made the exaust treatment system work more efficiently and at noticeable lower temp. . The BioDiesel also provides better lube something that the extra low sulfur fuel lacks. Now the bad points... ... BioDiesel does not have a long shelf life. It should be used with in 6 months of it being made. And you should add a Biocide to keep things from growing in your storage tank. If your buying fuel from a good supplier you will not have any issues, well as few as you will buying reg diesel.

Cummins does not recommend using biodiesel above a 5% blend. It is my understanding that a higher blend is not recommended because it could deteriorate the fuel lines which would be a problem for the fuel system (injectors). I have to buy biodiesel sometimes when traveling with our 5th-wheel camper. I always inquire about the percentage and usually get an answer of up to 15%. Talking to others filling up their trucks who live in the area indicate they use the biodiesel all the time and don't have problems. I don't know if Cummins/Chrysler just needs to make a change to the truck manuals indicating biodiesel is ok or if they also need to make some changes to the trucks so that biodiesel won't cause any long term problems.

Reason for the 5% recommendation (and that was a few years back when it was made) is that at the time there was no standard for fuel quality. If you installed the heavy duty filteration kit then they would allow 20%. Also 20% is allowed in milatary use. Alot has changed in the past few years nation wide standards that the fuel has to meet being the biggest one. The outher guys say that their trucks are B20 ready form the factory.

I think that the petroleum distributers and truck makers and the EPA need to get together and make an intelligent decision as to what is good and not shove this stuff down our throats and cause us undo damage to our investments because its against the recommendation of the truck/engine manufacture.

Ed, the diesel owners' manual for all three of the Dodge diesels I've owned, including my current 2010, have stated it is ok to use biodiesel only up to a 5% blend. The military vehicles may have a different type of fuel lines on them. The fuel lines on our trucks are probably purchased and installed by Dodge.

Yes that is true that the manuals all say that about the 5% blend. However Dodge said that higher blends could be used with the installation of the heavy duty filteration kit. I have the kit on my truck.
