Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Timing Vs. economy

Been looking at this turbodieselregister for about 3 weeks. Immediately noticed that along with the birds and bees, as a 12v owner, you had better know about the KDP.

Ordered the kit from TST, installed it, took about 5 very leisurely hours, instructions from TST were excellent, almost to the point of telling you which hand to put the wrench in. The Dowel Pin on my 260,000 miles 1994 was protruding a little more than 1/16 of an inch and one of those other little bolts was barely finger tight. One less this to worry about. No problems.

Didn't need an engine barring tool. Fortunately, laying under the truck you can reach damper bolts and stick a screwdriver in through the inspection cover.

Now it's time to see if I can get little more power out of the motor.

Sorry...

I am new to the TDR scene. But I do have a 98 12Valve ISB 53 block. What is a KDP and do I need to have it fixed?

-Thanks,

Nathan

I'd start with replacing the block! lol, do some searches on the KDP u should find a lot of answers, and a lot of people that have the jig

Why replace the block? I am familiar with the 'possibility' that it may crack, but I am not going to worry until it happens. The tech guy at BD told me they all don't crack, and it's a small amount that do. I have 138000 on it and tow a 33' 13000 trailer with no probs. It has a cam plate, K&N filter, pyrometer, jake brake and 4" dual exhaust. Plus a NV-5600 transmission. Does the KDP still matter in a NV-5600? Thanks HotRod Cummins for you reply. BTW, what does LOL mean?

LOL = Laugh Out Lout (internet slang)

And the KDP has nothing to do with the transmission.

LOL... ya mean " Laughing Out Loud". . or. . "Laughing On Line"... ... ...

Ya have to worry tho, when you SAY LOL when you hear a joke in person... ... ...

yes you do TRCM... why? did that happen? :) as far as the KDP goes, i'v seen them go at 250,000 miles, and i experianced mine going out at 99,000 miles trust me the work that is entitled in fixing your truck after the damage is done is nothing compared to getting the jig. as far as the 53 block goes, your right, they dont all crack. but my friend has just a little over 100,000 on his and it went, he *****ed enough till cummins payed for a new block, but they dont cover the labor, which you could immagine is rediculas!

Nathan,

Email me at -- email address removed -- for instructions on how to fix the KDP problem.

Just some more incentive to fix the KDP: It cost me $1000 to get mine fixed (after it fell and took out the gearcase), and I hear I got off CHEAP!

To top it off, I had all the parts to fix it, just couldn't allocate time to do it. . Only $600 left to pay on it too :(
