I can't figure this out, I can change the oil, start the truck and run for 5 minutes, turn off and let set for 15 minutes, then check the oil level and BLACK, just as black as before I changed it. Whats up with that?

I had a 97 and an 01 and they didn't do that. Do I need to run a cleaner through it, an engine flush or something? On the older gas engines I would run chemtool in it before changing oil. I don't think that would be too good for the turbo bearings tho. What do ya'll think? Is this black oil issue common on the 04. 5?

I even wasted a couple qts. pouring in through while the plug was still out. I guess the days are gone when you changed oil when it got blacker than coffee. crazy

I don't know why its normal but I notice it has to be emissions related. I even notice this in my Deere farm equip. One of my new Deeres did this just like my pickup until the seal went out in the denso high pressure pump and filled the crankcase full of diesel. Only 100 hours since then but the oil is still clear as new. I guess it rinsed all the extra soot created from the emissions equip out of the crankcase.

My oil never seems to get particularly black. Maybe it is just my eyesight but I have been reading about this black oil since I got the truck new, just never written in before.
anyone else have this type of truck and NOT black oil

Akshadow- if you have a 2003 you don't have the 3rd injection event etc. This is what is believed to cause the black oil in the 04. 5 and up trucks.

Yeah I wondered about this "Oil Truns Black Immediately " also, when I change mine it's still pretty much Honey Colored yet.

I guess post # 8 about the 3rd Injection thingy must be the culprit.

I have an '03 isb305 and 06 325. The '06 always looks like honey after a few thousand miles. The '06 is black after 5 miles. Both great motors.

Thoughts to myself... "Hmmmm, should I be a jerk and make fun of this guy cause he typed 06 when he meant 03 or should I just not say anything cause like my mom used to say if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all!" :)

For anyone who was wondering, his 03 is clean and his 06 is black.

Someone somewhere was just posting and asking if anyone had put a Cummins in an H1. I wish I could remember where. That is awesome man! How does it run? I hope you came back to this post to see my questions!

That's back when Mom's used to teach their kids manners, not like today's mom's " Oh do you want me to give you a timeout"

Most of them don't need a time out they need a good swift swat on the butt. :-laf
