Has anyone ever taken the black film off the doors on a quad cab? My drivers side door film is peeling and I was debating on just removing it. It is painted under the film so I thought it would look Ok. Just wondering if anyone has done this and what it would look like.

About half of my passenger side has come off. I went through a high pressure car wash. I couldn't get the glue off. I am sure that with the right solvent and ALOT of elbow grease you could get it off, but I don't really like how it looks.

I am sure it is painted under that film. You could try a hair dryer to heat it up to peel the rest of it off. If you do not like the looks afterwards you could use black paint as a replacement.

I have a door from an extended cab truck on my single cab. (busted up the original door pretty bad! LOL!)

anyhow, it had that black film on it... what you need to do is go to a body shop supply shop, like English Color or the like and get a pinstripe removal wheel... or "eraser wheel"... chuck it up in your drill and go to town. it won't damage the paint, but it takes the film off perfectly. While I was at it, I went ahead and debadged the truck. popped the badges off by hand and used the eraser wheel to remove the left over adhesive.

they work awesome.

darn car washes

I usually hand wash my truck, but I got lazy a few weeks ago and ran it through a carwash. I didn't realize until later that night that it had ripped about 3" off of each one.

What Film

I am on the road without my truck but I have a 2001 and I don't think I have any black film on the exterior of my truck? Is this an option or some thing that comes on the sport truck?

door film

On my 99 that space between the glass was looking bad so I used some black peel and stick vinyl, it's textured and looks really good . I found it at Pepboys, comes in a roll plenty enough to mess up a few times before getting it right. I even took the tailgate off and did the space under it(covers the welds) Make sure you start with a clean surface and peel the window molding out of your way. Mike

Update

Here are some pictures my truck with and without the door film. I really like the results without the door film. What do you think, should I leave it off or put it back on?

Looks as good with it off!!

I like it better with the strip on. But it is a matter of personal preference. How do you like it? Also, thanks for the info. Didn't know it was a strip of film. Thought it was paint. Someone deliberately scratched mine on the driver's side. Scratched it vertically from the bottom where the paint stops and the strip starts, up to the paint at the top. All I could do is shake my head and snort. Can't beleive some peoples off-spring! :(

MBFARMS,

Thanks for the pictures. That really helps visualize. However, on yours I think it looks better with it on. Without it the cab looks shorter, more like just and extended cab.

On mine there would be little difference as mine is a dark color anyway and you hardly notice the black section.

Thanks for the replies. I really am starting to really like it without the strip. An added bonus to without is not having to worry about the strip peeling again, and that is a huge plus for me, seeing how the film is $25 from dodge. I had a local vehicle graphics shop quote me $35 for film and install. So I will be peeling the other side. I have already bought the film for the drivers side door if anyone is interested. $25+shipping. EBottema the film is still available at the Dodge parts counter. I have a good friend that works there so I may have received a discount on that part.

You got a deal on it, I think retail is $40-45. I think that I'm going to take mine the rest of the way off. Since it happend on both sides I was going to have to do it anyway

Funny that this thread came up-- I ran my truck through a local "super (damaging) wash" and it really cleaned the truck-- even washed off parts of that black strip!!

I was disappointed, but I'm not one to really care much about cosmetics. I ran it through again, and more of it came off. I think it will take a couple tries, but I believe I can wash it all off with a few more super washes.

I have an eraser wheel, so I might give that a go; NAPA has them (at least mine did). DO NOT USE HIGH RPM WITH AN ERASER WHEEL-- you need a slow speed. My milwaukee drill is only 800 rpm, and it was perfect on other decal removal occasions.

I prefer the look with the black in place, but I'm too cheap to have it PAINTED like it should be.

Maybe when I get the other bodywork done:rolleyes:

Personally, I think the square corners at the front of the suicide door windows look out of place given the round corners at the rear and the generally rounded styling of the 2nd generation truck. The body color door posts also tend to break up the stylist's intent of having a continuous window area from the windshield to the rear of the suicide door - this makes the cab look "choppy".

Now, having said all that, opinions related to appearance are purely subjective. All I've done is offer mine as requested.
