Damn my truck runs good, but today was emission test day and it's putting out twice the black smoke they will allow. The truck has passed a couple times with the TST plate, but I had the injection pump rebuilt and the tech slid my plate full forward. I don't have a clue where the plate used to be, how far should I slide it back to ace the retest? The first retest is free, then it's $65 a wack!

I just got back from the retest and it is super clean, it also is only putting out 44 HP!! I put the plate half way back and disconected the AFC, damn, it's like driving a FERD now!!

Plug off the boost line that goes to the AFC so that the AFC does NOT see any boost. Push the plate all the way back towards the firewall... . and if you really want to get sneaky... crank out the high idle screw so that when they floor it... . it really isn't at full throttle.

I'd be mighty surprised if you got any smoke after doing all of this... . I'd also be surprised if the truck was able to get out of its own way!! :D

HTH,

Matt

Try rolling the star wheel out quite a bit and see what affect that has. It should reduce the smoke. Maybe enuff so you don't have to mess with anything else.

The plate is a different shape than stock. It looks like you have a #5 plate. The smoke you would get at the test is low RPM probably so the full load stop (torque plate) would probably not get in play. It seems to me that the quick reaction of the AFC before boost really gets up is what makes all that smoke. Star wheel and boost line are involved with that.

Here's how to get past emissions:

1. Slide your afc all the way back.

2. Disconnect and plug your afc line.

If that does not do it, you're never going to pass. That will only leave maybe 100 hp. Clean as a... ... ... well... . REALLY clean. :D

Btw I just put a grabber screw in the line when I disconnect it to plug it off. Just a couple of turns will do it.

gov springs

FYI,

Just got my emmsions test today, max opacity was 20%. Still passed the test though.

Prior 3 years max was 8%. Only change this year was 3K gov springs.

Me thinks I need more air (16cm housing?) not to mention a decent TC. All tests are done with OD off & WOT so TC is unlocked.

2002: added 3K GSK, (I think the AC was on!)

60mph, 20% opacity, 150 Hp

50mph, 4%, 150Hp,

40mph,4%. 141 Hp

2001:

60mph, 2%,113hp (??)

50mph, 6%,160hp

40mph, 8%,158hp

2000:

60mph,8%,147hp,

50mph,2%,146hp

40mph,4%,131hp

1999:

60mph,5%,159hp

50mph,7%,145hp

40mph,4%,128hp

yeah, halfways is around stock. all the way back and it will run. i accidentally did this with my truck a long while ago. i'd slowly climb to 2,000rpms and then once the turbo got going some it'd shift at around 2,600rpms. then back to 2000 after the shift. didn't take more than 10seconds to remember where the stock spot was. hehe, at least it'll pass.

Where did you have your emissions testing at? The place I go never gives me the opacity % or a HP readout. They simply say I passed and give me the papers to present to the DMV.

Exaust Readers in the name of the place. On north Nevada Avenue about a block south of Garden of the Gods. Call ahead, appointments are pretty much mandatory. Don't have the number handy but they are in the book or information.

Are you sure you what to know your Dyno numbers? Mine continue to dissapoint.
