I ran into a thread in trailer life.

This guy has a 2004. 5 3500 QC 4x4. 22,000 miles and has had black smoke from day one. Had the reflash done in Oct and it didn't help. He's been to 3 dealerships and everyone tells him it is normal. Let's see if this works:

Let's show him what a wealth of information there is to find in the TDR. He'll be checking this post on his own. Give him a warm welcome!

He's in Buhl, Idaho.

You may want to make sure all of your turbo hose connections are tight and mot leaking. The clamps can losssen alllow air leaks which can cause black smoke.

If I could get ANY black smoke out of mine I'd be a happy camper. I can pour tons of white smoke out of it after idling for a while but thats a whole nother issue. If you're black smoking... ... put a smile on your face and keep on trucking!!!!

I'd bet 2 cents that the map sensor is the culprit. Probably not bad enough to set any codes, but off enough to hurt the mileage, and puff a little smoke. That's the direction I would look anyways.

If that's not the problem, I bet you could slightly clip the signal from the map, and that would hold the fueling back to prevent smoke. You'd just have to be carefull not to lower the signal to much or the truck wouldn't have any power.

Or, there's always the turn down tip, let it stick out a little bit and you won't soot up the truck anymore.

I agree with FDavid. Since when is this a problem? :-laf Oo.

If I work it right, I can get a good cloud of black smoke out of my '05. I have been able to do it since the day I drove it off the dealer's lot. I love this truck! Oo. :D
