Should a truck smoke when it's stock? Like let's say I take off from a light and get on it pretty hard, is it normal for it to leave a decent sized black cloud?



Just curious.
 
Don't know the exact definition of 'decent' but mine does. It is a HO motor though.



In your case, check out the IAT sensor and MAP sensors. Clean them - you can do a search to find out how.



Also check the intercooler boots. The lower driver's side rubs on the inner fender metal and gets a hole. The upper pass side rubs on the AC pressure switch.



If you eliminate these, then check to make sure your turbo wastegate is not sticking open.



If it still smokes then enjoy it when someone p****s you off.
 
I'll check those sensors. 150,000 miles and it's just had oil changes, stuff like that. I don't imagine those were even touched.



It's been in the mid 70s here lately.



The bottom intercooler boot is kinda crumpled in a bit, is that normal?



How do I check turbo wastegate operation?

Yes - it normal if the sides aren't perfectly formed. Take it off and check the insides for cracks and holes, or alternately compress the intake with less than 40lbs of compressed air and listen for leaks. I use a round plate made from 1/8" hardboard sized to fit in the end of the rubber hose that connects to the airbox/BHAF. In the center of this plate is an old tire valve stem. Pump it up with an air bladder that is pressurized to 40lbs. More than 40 you may blow out seals and gaskets.

Hook up compressed air to the actuator air supply and blow into it. You should see the actuator rod move back and forth with the application/removal of air.
 
I pulled the MAP and IAT sensors out. The MAP sensor was clean, IAT had a tiny bit of film on it, but was still white. Not bad for 150,000 miles. I was expecting it to be all sooty like I saw on some of the posts on here.
 
On that wastegate check, just to clarify, don't you want to keep the pressure regulated at say, 25-30 psi max? I'm thinking these are the numbers I saw in the FSM when I was reading the other day...



Have you checked the air filter? I'd think that could starve it for air... ;)
