My truck seems to put out more black smoke than it should on acceleration. My ford dosen't throw any noticeable smoke, but runs just as strong. With the price of fuel I hate to see it going out the pipe. Are ther any flashes out for this on the 05s? Thanks, Jeff

Is it on light accel, or only when you really honk down on it?

Tomeygun, It's even on light to medium accel. I like the way it runs but at the cost of diesel I'd like to burn all of it. I notice the oil in this truck gets very black also, where the ford stays pretty clean. It's hard to tell which truck is faster but I love to drive the dodge, it feels like a sports car. The ford handles more like a boat but is more comfortable on long trips except for engine noise. The cummins is much quieter. Jeff

I notice the same thing on mine... much more smoke than on my '01. Sometimes its fun and sometimes embarrassing (especially if I'm just under medium accelleration with no load). Much more noticable at night when there is a vehicle behind you.

I'm wondering if the cat isn't just blocking this crap up and then the pressure of medium to strong accelleration is blowing the built up soot out. So that at light accel you see no smoke and at medium/heavy you see the combination of some smoke and the pent up smoke from the light accelleration. I seem to remember more soot coming out of my 01 at idle (only because I used to park right up next to my white pickett fence in CA. and realized that I had to repaint that section every year!

Seriously, if you guys want to see some serious smoke, keep it below about 2000 RPM's for about a week or so and make sure to accelerate easy during that week long period. Then when you want to see the smoke, just get the engine to an RPM level the turbo will readily spool at, and place your right foot on the firewall. I suspect the stock muffler or cat does tend to trap the soot collected from easy operation and blows it out on harder acceleration. I have definitely noticed a trend that if I go easy on it for 1/4 tank or more and then hammer it, you get serious overfueled looking smoke. It'll be interesting to see if it behaves differently with my new MBRP 600 muffler kit and cat "test" pipe when it arrives. I'm guessing it doesn't store up soot anymore with that combo.
