First look at my sig... . Well thats what i have now, before this one i had a 98 with a BD 5 postion pro comp box and injectors. My question is: when i had that truck pumped up i could smoke out the whole intersection with black smoke when i got on it, Thought it was so cool, I want to make my 05 do that, is that possiable? If so what do i need to do to it?

Smoke your tires not your exhaust

Doughboy21k... not to break your chops, the day of being cool and blowing a lot smoke should be ending. :-{} Not to blow smoke, maintain and increase HP levels is the " in thing in the west". Each time this practice of blowing a lot of smoke, has caused the EPA to demand better CO2 level controls, ie. p-pumps, to VC-44's, and now CP-3's and emmisions testing in some States and counties. If you want to smoke something it should be your tires not exhaust  ... If you still want to do this idiot display of mosquito control, just inject some raw D/F after the turbo directly into your exhaust. Just don't do it around my area, I don't need anymore regulations.

Thanks Heeb. I have an 01 that can make obscene smoke, But I am veerryy carefull about when to use it. Blacking out an intersection and laughing about it while looking in the mirror is not the place. Just like all the drunken gun shooting vandals on motorcycles have ruined activities for responsible target shooters and offroad riders like myself, the J*** A**** that do this will ruin this too.

I said nothing about going out there and just smoking out the air nonstop all the time... . Yes i agree that there is a time and place for everything... ... But I am not wanting to just go out there and blow smoke for laughs..... I am just really wanting to know what Cummins did to there motor going from 2nd gen to 3rd gen to prevent them from smoking like they used to?

What they did was put in a computer controlled fuel system that puts in enough fuel for the amount of air and load conditions. If you don't add power chips etc. you won't get it to smoke unless it malfunctions. That's a good thing. My 2nd gen used to smoke a lot when I floored it but smoke is wasted fuel. Modern technology is able to achieve a fuel/air balance that was very hard to accomplish with mechanical injection.

Doughboy21kd,

If you want to smoke alot on occassion, then go with a tst w/ "twins" program. Lots of smoke there! Have fun, that's what it's all about.

Doughboy21kd, in your first post about the subject you Thought it was so cool want to make my 05 do that and in your next post, you said But I am not wanting to just go out there and blow smoke for laughs.

It seems you are back peddling a little? I'll try to answer your question, about cummins did fuel wise from 1st gen to 2nd gen to 3rd gen.

1st gen trucks had full mechanical pumps P7100 and simular. Best pumps today in my opinion no issues. 2nd. gen went to VP-44's electronic ( you know about failures and inadequate lift pumps) 3rd. gens went to CP-3 high pressure common rail. 3rd. gen fuel pressures can go as high as 27,000 psi. The idea is for better atomization of fuel for more complete burning... These are not Cummins ideas, these changes are the result of EPA regulations, note the 05's and up come with cats... . each change causes more electronics, and costs, and reliability issues. Everyone wants more HP, performance including myself but we now have to be aware of CO2 emissions and smoke. The after-market diesel performance leaders are very aware of the EPA issues, and if they want to stay in business they need to insure their performance products don't exceed a now narrowing pollution acceptance standards. We have to change our thinking of "once was cool itsn't necessary cool today". If we continue to blow alot of smoke, which is very visible we are going to be targeted even more. Fortunately, there are a lot of smarter people then me that will hopefully keep the performance market "smoke free". Think of it as a new cigar, all the flavor, all the smell and no smoke :-laf :-laf

Mine is not a real dark smoke with the tst twin and BDCL. Its mostly a grey haze, it gets a little darker when I get on it, nothing like a 12 or 12 valve though

ok heres a trick question. how do i make 500hp without smoke? no twins.

can it be done? as much as i would love a 3rd gen it aint gonna happen. how could i keep the people who :{ about the smoke off my back?

BTighe, besides myself there are a lot of 3rd gens making 500+ hp with no smoke! Getting the right balance of turbo, injectors, trans mods and fueling is the key. You got to research, make changes gradually and have a reasonable and achieveable goal. My buddies at Industrial Injection are pushing 800+hp on a single turbo with no smoke on a 3rd. gen. They have just about got all the componets dialed in, watch for more later this spring.

Like you said, keep ahead of the smoke and watch for any red lites breaking through the fog... :-laf :-laf I will be easy to spot if I'm in your area, I will be the 2005 red quad approx. 2 miles ahead of you slowly pulling out of your site. :D  l

I have a stock 05 with 8900 miles and when i get on it to pass slower traffic i get a lot of smoke or dust. I have a buddy at work who has the same truck as me and his smokes too. I would prefer that it not smoke at all. . Is this normal or should i take it back to my deal for a repair? Any help would be great.

My 04. 5 would let out a blast of smoke if on the highway and then attempting to pass anyone, I could leave a real smoke screen. I was not happt but my dealer claimed it was normal. Well, the 04 305/555 that I had the year before never did it! The only problem that truck had was going in a straight line and keeping ball joints in it. My 04. 5 was a great truck with lots of "stock" power! I just had to keep my foot out of it!

Geeeez, I miss that truck!

My '05 also smokes when I give it a lot of go-juice. This usually happens in the morning. I also wish it didn't smoke at all. When you have respiratory problems, there is no need to add to the polution.
