Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Black smoke

A friend of mine has an '01 CTD, no H. O. and stock and whenever he starts it cold it puffs black smoke and then no sign of it. It also smells rich and then stops. Is this normal? Could he maybe need to adjust his valves?

at 100,000 miles adjust the valves.

a puff of black smoke is ok my 06 with 6,000miles on it has a small pluff on start-up Taking the muffler off helped show it. dads 05 with a EZ has a small puff but the muffler is still on and thats got 45,000 and my 2001... smokes at idle

my stock 01 throws out a little puff at start up too. then nothing else.

same here, my 98. 5 throws a little puff at start up and nothing else until i hammer it down with the edge juiced up a little
