Black smoke

Just bought my first diesel 1995 2500 auto SLT 4x4 X-tended cab. The new car dealer took it in trade. It has 49,000 miles and the dealer (GMC) is giving me a 3 month or 3,000 mile warranty.

The previous owner had a fifth wheel he towed here in the North west. he has installed a pac-exhaust brake and electric fan and add on transmission cooler, pyro and trans. temp gauge. it seems to run fine as far as I know but I noticed a large puff of black smoke from exhaust every time I pump the fuel pedal at any speed and any temp. Only have put 600 miles on it no oil usage yet. I would like to know if this is OK or could it be a problem. And who can I take it to in my area (Olympia Wa. )to check out any add ons he might have put on the truck so I know what I have and before I take it back to the dealer and have them blow black smoke up you know where?

Probably normal. What is happening is that you have temporary over fueling until the turbo catches up and provides more wind. Some trucks are worse than others. Especially if they have been BOMBed. One "sickly" truck goes by the name Old Smokley or Smokasauraus. Kills a lot of skeeters too. Of course, it has 620+ HP available. Mine will smoke like a forest fire if I jump on it. Clears up pretty good once the turbo catches up.



There are a lot of NW BOMBers on these forums. Send a PM to Evan A. Beck. He is probably the guy you want to see. He works for the Power Shop in Seattle somewhere. I suspect that you have an after market fuel plate in your injection pump.

Sounds to me like you got some boost leaks of some sort. Most (9 out of 10) of the rigs I work on, whether they are Ford, Dodge, or whatever, all come in with leaks of one kind or another, causing the very symptom you describe. Could also be that your aneroid is set too soft, giving too much fuel at low boost. Make sure your air filter is clean before digging any deeper. THEY SAY ! SMOKING IS BAD YOU YOU.

BUT IN SOME CASES !! SMOKING IS GOOD. IF YOU BOMB IT, IT WILL SMOKE.

There are a couple of modified diesels up here in New England. Let's just say that the smog is getting to be almost as bad as L. A. when there is a get together.

How much boost are you making, how high EGT under full sustained throttle? If your boost is over about 20 lbs and you can get the EGT above 1300 its prolly been BOMBED so you already saved some money.

I think these numbers are about right, been a while since mine has been stock so if I am off some one help him out.

Well thanks all for the help. I took the truck back to the dealer and they said that it is the winter additives they put in the fuel here that makes it smoke. I don't have a boost gauge but My EGT's have never exceded 900 with no load and up hill. I have a stock air cleaner now but I noticed when I first looked at the truck it had red oil under the air filter housing and a K/M sticker on it. Soooo! Are THEY blowing smoke are what?

This smoke is adjustable via the afc housing. Do a search on that part, and you will find tons of info here. Also, you should know that black smoke from a diesel is not a problem as long as it is not all of the time.
