Black Smoke?

My buddy's 2002 just started making black smoke. All he has done to it is straight piped. It has been straight piped for a couple months now and the black smoke just started out of the blue. What does this mean? Is it normal or should he put the muffler back on and take it to the dealer to be checked out. I'm sure this has happened to at least one of you 24 valvers. Thanks

Anything that would restrict air intake or boost pressure could cause that also. Check the air filter, air intake connections, boost line couplings, intake horn bolts, and intake manifold bolts.

When I straight piped mine, I noticed it as well. I have had the muffler on an off, on and off and I can tell you that allot of that soot settles in the muffler! With out the muffler it doesn't have anywhere to hide. The only I beleive you will see smoke is on start up, a small puff and if you give hard throttle with low boost. As an example, at 1200 rpm you romp it, it will smoke until the you get enough air mixing with the fuel. Have your friend put an boost or fueling box on there and watch it smoke. Unless it does it constantly, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Well, I think it does do it constantly, and it didn't start when he straight piped it. It was fine straight piped for a couple months with no smoke and now it just started all of a sudden.

What Work and TC said... there is a air intake/Boost problem. Have him check the boots on turbo-intercooler-intake horn. I bet one of them is slipping off. It is real common unless you check them often. I always do mine when I change the oil.
