Are your tow mirrors up with no trailer attached? Have any monster energy stickers anywhere? Maybe the ever so popular large black mono stack and huge cummins logo in the back window? I've heard all these things add tons of horsepower. It could be a place to start looking for unplanned hp causing tons of black smoke. .

All joking aside do you mean actual chunks of soot being blown out?

Wow. We really need to know what year of truck, how many miles on it, transmission, and any/all modifications you have done, especially to the engine.

2001 1 ton 4x4 diesel, 4'exhaust k@n filter fass fuel system, bd power lock on trans fuel pressure and trans temp gauge. diesel automatic 185000 kilometers.

First off a K&N is BAD BAD BAD news on a diesel, ditch it.

Second, what is the truck doing? Soot on a diesel is normal, is this truck new to you, or just blowing more smoke than normal?

The more information you provide the better the help will be.

Presuming that the complaint is more smoke that usual, my first suggestion would be to remove the intake tube from the turbo and make sure that it still spins freely, and there is not excessive side or end play to the turbo shaft, and all the impeller fins are intact.

Could be a large boost leak, look carefully at all the piping clamps and boots from the turbo to the intercooler and then intercooler to intake. Get a 7/16" socket to check tightness of clamp. And yes, lose the K&N air filter, they're know for being the poorest filtering of the oilable media aftermarket air filters.

Large boost leak, stuck wastegate, dead or dying turbo, leaking injector, IAT or MAP sensor, excessive load on the engine... long list of possibilities with what little info on the symptoms and response from the OP.
