Blackstone Oil Report Input Needed

Just did my first Oil Report after my second oil change. (11,500 miles)



Report shows in comments that "Viscosity was low,reading down in the 5W/30 range. Flash point was normal, so we don't think fuel caused the drop and no worries at this point"



Well, I had my oil changes done at the dealer for $39. 95 (They do sell a good deal of diesels) But, I am now a little worried that they used incorrect oil for my Cummins.



My owners manual says 15W/40. Figuring they are the dealer and should know what oil to use I never told them. (Possible mistake I know)



I am looking for the boards opinion. Do I need to tell the dealer that my Cummins takes different oil than a Dodge Neon????

*I* sure wouldn't bet on the service department's intelligence - this sure wouldn't be the FIRST time one of their "5 star" techs put in the wrong stuff - especially at that $39. 95 price - diesels usually cost more. Next thing ya gotta wonder, did they even put in the right amount...

They had to have used the wrong viscosity oil. They did an oil change for $39. 95 so you can bet you bippy they went the cheapest route. JMO but I'd say something to them and bring along your lab report. :-{}

check the reciept it should say what they used

I'm not sure the write up guy doing the receipt and the guy under the truck would match! I would bring the report in to the dealer to see what they can do for you. My guess is they put 5W30 from the start.

Change dealers or find a good Mechanics shop (real mechanics!)

That will change your oil.

It might cost you a little more, but you know how the saying goes.

I spoke with Blackstone who said it was likely they filled with the improper oil but, no worries with just one change.



So much for the "5 Star Service" Huh?



The current oil in the engine should be 15W/40 per the reciept but, who knows. I will have to dig to come up the reciept for the oil sampled.



Guess, I will start doing it myself. I intended to do my own changes when I bought the truck. I even have the maintainance package kit from Geno's (4 oil filters/ 2 fuel filters/ 1 air filter) sitting here at home. I also have a quick drain adapter on already so it should be a piece of cake.



Thought I had a capable dealer.

$39. 50 for a 12quart diesel oil change? I just paid over $70 at my dealer, but they used a real Mopar/Fleetguard Stratapore filter and Mopar 15W-40 diesel oil. The oil alone cost $35 (MSRP)! While I wasn't happy about the price, I guess you get what you pay for. I know personally that I would pay at least $36 for 12Quarts of Valvoline Super Blue (Cummins CH-4 endorsed), and at least $10 for a Fleetguard filter. Obviuosly, your dealer is cheating on the parts in order to do that change for tht kind of money.

I have several trucks... . I use the same lube center for all of them... . I went looking for quality not price... I'm paying about $60 per change and do it every 7500 miles. My oldest truck has 450K miles..... the owner and manager knows us by name... and I when I sat down with him I said that I expected quality work and if they rushed it..... I'd be gone..... and if they stripped a plug they could expect to bear the repair cost... not use an oversize plug... . The boxes have syn. oil and expect that to be added... as each driver takes the trucks in we remind them that the boxes have syn oil and the engines have standard dyno oil.....



We run a standard 40 wt oil for about 7 months a year... . and a multigrade 20/50 the rest of the year... . and when their out overnight at below 30* we plug them in..... or if their's room they are in the shop... .

How many miles was on the oil? If the TOTAL miles was 11,500, that would mean about half of that figure, or about 5,750 on the oil. If this is correct, NO oil should break down in that amount of miles, unless there is a problem!



I would suspect the oil that was installed by your dealer was a 30 grade oil.

Plans are to start changing my own oil with the next change.



Now I have to decide what brand/type oil to use.

think he said this was a second oil change.
