blew the plug off the cp-3 plug today - fuel was going everywhere by the time i limped home - looks like a freeze plug on the side of the cp - 3 pump.

i wasn;t getting on it or getting after it , just driving normal and slowing down to take a exit ramp ,talked to my diesel guy and he said i would need a new pump - go to call the dealership tommorow - HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE ? i', just wondering if anyone else had this problem happen to them -

Seen it happen quite a few times. usually comes from sticking FCA's and/or high pressure. Iffff you catch it before the pump starts come apart internally, you are OK. However if not trash can be run through the injectors

caught it early , just want to know how to avoid it in the future - i hope i can get a new one from the dealer tommorow - just want to know what i can do so it doesn;t happen again ? is there something out there so if the pressure spike at 26000 psi that it won;t let it or some kind of a safty thing i can install ?

there is a check ball system built into the pump to help eliminate the problem, but if it does not seat properly, the pressure feeds back into the pump and grenades it.

the CP3 is pretty cheap compared to a VP-44
A reman is $735. 75
modified 33% is $1400 and 45% more fuel is $1800

I had one do the same thing. It was the 2nd CP3 in my dual kit, dmax pump. Pump was totally destroyed internally. I had fuel all over the drivers side engine compartment and 1/2 way up the rear door all the way down the bedside and tailgate. I kinda felt sorry for the next guy at the car wash that day. :-laf

Anyone want to buy a slightly used pump?:D

Did you get any shrapnel in the high pressure side of your fuel system?

How old was the DMAX pump?

Were there any signs of it going, before pop?

I'm still trying to figure out why when I floor it it basically stalls out then comes on strong after a second, like it's not injecting fuel.

Not sure about the shrapnel but everything still runs fine. I figured it was a little late to worry about it after the fact anyway. The pump was used when I got it so I'm not sure on it's age but it's toast now!:-laf

I saw no signs before it went. I just fueled up and drove about 10 miles, smelled fuel so I just thought it was on my hands or clothes. When the smell got worse I got out and looked and there was a LARGE steady stream running out from under the hood. I drove it to a friends shop and swapped pumps and probably lost 10 or 15gal of fuel in about 5 miles, I left a nice trail everywhere I went.
