Amen. Why cry over a few extra pennies for the use of a block heater on a $40-K truck ?

Based on the performance of those two compared to my new one I would guess the heaters in the third gen trucks is about 750 watts.
Mine says 1200 watt on the cord.

I use a timer, but to be honest it's from simple ignorance. I thought that by running the block heater too much you'd burn out the element early and have to replace it. I figured by running only for a few hours at a time I'd get more life out of it.

As of tonight, that policy changes. From now on I'll plug it in around 8PM and leave it until I pull away at 6AM the next morning.
DITTO! I had the same excuse Ryan gave, concerned about burning out the element. Like I said, I normally don't plug in, but at 19*F I knew it would take awhile to get up to operating temps only traveling around 10 miles to work. and warm cab would be a plus when plugging in. I also will do the plug in next time without the timer. Thanks for all your replies, they helped out alot. Oo.

I was of the 3 hour timer school... ... ... . until today. The truck is in a garage (unheated) and I thought that 3 hours was plenty. We have been having a cool spell here in the northeast and I plugged in my truck yesterday afternoon and just left it. It was -9 this morning and I went out and started the truck for my "dump run", it always starts up well, plugged in or not. I turned on the ebrake and did a couple of chores for a few minutes and then started off for the dump, my truck was warm inside and blowing heat like I couldn't believe, the temp was well into the "operating range". I have always gotten heat pretty quickly, but not like this. I now believe in plugging in all night as has been posted here previously by other members.

Also anyone out there that lives in a northern climate that is buying a new truck without seat heaters better have his head examined or have more lard on his butt than I do:) . They are great:D .

I do not have heated seats, but have a friend who does. I gotta confess, they make me nervous the way they heat up your "boys"... I always think they're going to get burned!

The boys are very happy with the heat. They were brought up on the stories of the ever famous Brass Monkey:-laf I am told that there would be an awful smell before the seats get too hot.

Some of the stuff I used to get into in my younger day marked my "boys" as Church Bells, LOL ... ... ... ... ... . that seat aint gettin that hot, course they aint that big anymore either :(

Heated Seats

Dean: You reminded me of something that happened about three years ago when me and my wife went to look at a used Chevy Tahoe for her to drive:-laf . It had the leather, and heated seats and while we were test driving it my wife's passenger side seat (heat) was on I guess on high if it has that setting, there had been a cold snap the day before, and original owner had left the seat on. It was a pretty warm day of the test drive, and about half way through it that seat on the passenger side started getting super hot. We did'nt know how to turn it off, never had heated seats before. I wished I had a picture of my wife holding herself up as we were driving back to that mans house. :-laf :-laf :-laf . priceless.
