Block Heater install...on 04?

Temps have been getting down into the single digits at night here lately in NE Ohio.



Thinking about getting a block heater from the dealer and installing it myself. Is this a job the average backyard mechanic could do without too much trouble?



Are there other options for pre-heating the engine when left outside 24/7.



All your opinons, experiences and tips appreciated.



Yes Im kicking myself in the pants for letting the dealer tell me the option was unnecessary, thats why they were not standard anymore

Your truck should come with the heater just knot the cord. I have a cord on order. Wish I could help more do a search on block heater . The order # is listed somewhere.

I put my cord on today. Just unscrew the black cap and screw the cord on. Routing the cord I guess is personal preference? I think DC is going to leave off 2 lug nuts on each wheel on the 2005's. They will be available at the dealer though. (Ha. . Ha. . )

BTW this cord is usually available from Cummins for about 1/2 the price of the one from DC... .



Its also the same cord on my 2000 F550 Ford Powerstroke...

Its pretty darn cold on that snow covered driveway, so save me some frozen fingers and tell me... . Exactly where do I look for the black cap that hides the connector to the heater?



How would I order one direct from Cummins vs the dealer? (website?)

I just bought a new '04 and had the dealer install the cord as part of the deal.



The cost from the dealer is $65. Someone posted a couple of weeks ago that Cummins sells the same cord, but without the clips that hold it to the frame.



I really don't need the block heater where I live, but there's no telling where work will send me. Next month, if I find myself up north, it could come in handy.



As far as I can tell, the cord plugs into the passenger side of the block, just above the top of the oil pan, in the front half.

I was walking into work today and a Cummins mechanic just happened to be at our office working on our generator. I asked him if they had the cord at their shop and he walked over to his truck and gave me one... ..... helluva guy. It didn't come with the clips, but it was free and I routed it just fine. Plugged it in for the first time tonight. It's on the passenger side of the block and you will see a black cap. Unscrew the cap, screw on the cord and you're done.

Joe,I just bought my 2004 in dec of 2003. I bought my block heater cord from a cummins dealer here in s. michigan,wise international/cummins truck sales ph#517-783-2721. I paid $17. 50 for mine. They are located about 50 miles north of toledo oh. Great people to deal with. Had my cord in one day. Dealer said about a 2 month wait. Hope this helps. coobie

If you order in your truck- it is a 10$ line item. Even if you never use it,it is good insurance that you will not NEED it.

God I hope not. Had to go buy a lug nut from the dealer yesterday. None of the autoparts store carried one that would fit my truck. Dealer charged me $5. 83 for one. Luckily the tire shop that stripped it out was actually paying the bill.

The mopar # is 5086737-AB. They are finally coming in to the parts counters now. I waited two months to get mine. I paid $21 for it. Using Rosco's pictures it took me less than 5 minutes to install (Thanks Rosco!)



The mopar part has three clips attached that attch the cord to the frame rail. I believe the Cummins part you'll have to figure out a way to do that yourself.



BTW, I routed the cord out of the bumper next to the tow hook. I heard some people are complaining that the cord end chips up the paint on top of their bumper if you rout it out under the hood.

hey mojavejoe, where are you in N. E. OH. i am in berea if you want to look at how the cord is routed. there is a cummins dealer on the corner of Northfield and Alexander Rd by 271, across from the ford plant in walton hills. you might give them a try for the cord. 440-439-6800

Got cord from Cummins same day

WOW! What a great forum.



Didn't even know the block heater was there behind the oil filter, until I asked you guys about not having one.



Thought I'd be waiting weeks to get a cord. But, went to local Cummins Bridgeway store today (18 hours after my first post) and bought the standard Cummins cord set for $13. 33 +tax.



This must be my lucky week Oo.



Now Im just waiting for a warm day, like anything above 20F, to go outside and install the cord.

Joe,it is going to be 20 degrees or so plus here tomarrow in s. michigan. I was looking at the long range forecast tonight,they are calling for 6 degrees for the high next friday and -10 below for the low. You better get that cord installed ASAP. HE HE. Good luck !! coobieOo.
