Hey All,

I dont have a diesel tuning shop near by, and with the cold, I want a block heater. I have the local dodge dealership, I would like to know how much it would cost for the part and possibly for the labor. Thanks again,

Regards,

John

If you have a Cummins Parts dealer, go there, Might be a little cheaper. . you will need the Serial # of your block. . it is on the drivers side of the gear case

It is very easy to install. . There is a fitting on the passenger side of the block... half-way down and half way back... where the block heater screws in. Then run the cord to the front bumper. . One thing, DO NOT run the engine with the block heater plugged in. . it creates a static charge and shorts the heater... Been there, done that.

As previously mentioned above, the block heater is already installed. All you need is a cord to route power to it. I would order a cord from Geno's or your local Cummins shop. The cord usually has clips that allow the cord to attach to the frame etc. at points that route it up front near the grill. The cord is on the passenger side between the head lights and the grille. I hope this helps.
I think the local stealership will charge you a lot more than Geno's.

ok guys, in EXACT detail, where do i find the female plug for the heater on my block, so when i do get the plug, i can hook it up... . thanks for all the help

Regards,

John

Remove the air filter box lid and pipe from turbo with a screwdriver. Standing at the passenger side fender you can see the oil filter and just to the left (rear) of the filter (within 3 inches) is the block heater. 1" dia threaded ring with two prongs.

If the cord was not factory installed there may be some kind of cap/plug on it. If it was factory installed there may be a knurled ring and a cord sticking out of it.

Double check what everyone else is saying before buying one. I assumed that all the 2001s came with them standard. That may be just because I live in the Northeast and they ship them here that way, but I didn't have to ask for it or order it special on mine. It was simply there all along.

hey jgamble, I have an 2001 an they have the block heater. about 6-inch from left side of oil filter side of block . black extention cord to a alumium looking nut for heater, and wire with male plug goes to the right side of radiator. rcrosby

WOW!!!!! THANKS GUYS!!!! I would have never thought so much useful info was around... I will tomorrow with the sun here. If so, I will update, or if not, again, I will update. All CTD owners are awesome, its like a little cult... . lol

As others have said your 01 has the cord from the factory. Open the hood, it will be on the passenger side with a cover over the plug in prongs.

Hey guy's, sorry to jump in, but how do you check if the block heater is working. I plug mine in and the wts light still stay's on forever lately. I think it's bad. Could it be just a bad cord, or should I replace the whole thing? Thank's.

How long are you waiting before you check the light? Usually takes about 2 hours before everything is nice and toasty. Even then, the light will come on for a few seconds anyway. Also, might want to check the circuit breaker it's plugged in to. Perhaps it blew and there's no juice to the outlet.

Check it with an ohm meter to see if it has an open circut. The less scientific way is to plug it in and listen for the sizzle after about 10 seconds.

After having my truck since it was new I have been staring at the factory installed cord all of this time. Mine was on the passenger side right to the left of the radiator (when looking towards the back of the truck). There is a dust cover over teh plug, take a look and you should see it.

I've tried 2 different cord's, and at two different houses. I plug it in for the whole night, and in the morning, the wts light stay's on forever, like it isn't plugged in. I had an issue with it earlier this winter. I kept tripping the breaker everytime I would plug it in. A couple day's before that started happening, It almost seemed like the block heater was working too good. Almost no wait, and I had heat almost right away! I think it's fried!
