Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Block Heater

Appears my block heater is not working. Looked in service manual for diagram. Found nothing. I checked the resistance of the plug from neutral to hot and found completely open ( infinite) no resistance. Does anyone know what the resistance should be ?.

Is there a fuse or breaker in the AC line to the heater ?.



Any input appreciated.

With meter set on 200 ohms, my meter reads 20. 4. Can't guarantee the accuracy of the meter. bg

If you read an open circut (no ohms) at the plug then unplug it from teh heater and try again at the heater (without the cord attached). If you still read an open circut your heater is burned out. You should be able to get a new one from a good parts house. I bought one from Napa. I think it was about $100 before the farm discount. If you need a part number I can get you one. I also replaced mine with a 1500 watt model instead of the standard 750, it warms up real good

Scott, you paid too much, Cummins only wants around $35 for the element, $25 for the cord.

Does the block heater come stock on the truck and if so where is the cord for it usually at? I want to be able to use it if I have the chance, unfortunetly the place I live at has no access to outside electricity.

The cord should be located at the passenger side of the radiator near the bumper, (have to raise the hood to access it). bg

What! Me, pay too much. The story of my life. Pay for this, pay for that. That's how it goes. I did call Cummins but opted to pay more for the high wattage unit. Unfortunately I sold that truck about a year later so I guess it didn't pay off. BTW, I think it came with a cord.

If I change the heater element I will probably loose most of it. I may just wait and see what type of winter we may have.
