I thought I read somewhere in issue 60 that Cummins made some adapters so that you could use a 1/8" pipe tap oil pressure sending unit in the side of the block. Now I can't seem to find it. Anyone know what the part numbers are for these odd fittings or what page it was on? Thanks Ken Irwin

I'm not aware of Cummins making any such bit, but if it's true I might be interested.

There are 4 ports in the main oil rifle. One of them is M14x1. 5, where the factory pressure switch is plumbed.

The other 3 ports are all plugged with M10x1. 0 socket head screws with an o-ring for sealing. Of those 3 ports, only one of them is really accessible - the one just above the ECM. You can see it if you look carefully through the driver side wheel well.

I really wanted to try to use that port, and bought an M10x1. 0 - to - 1/8 NPT adaptor to try it out. But I just couldn't make it work without leaking in a way that I was comfortable with. (If you blow one of those ports open, massive engine damage will occur very quickly). Not to mention the clearances back there made it hard to get things to fit nicely.

nickleinonen is currently running a gauge off that port, though! He used a copper sealing washer, but was concerned that he had to torque the fitting so tight that he damaged the threads in the block.

I tried a copper washer, and several different sized o-rings. They all leaked to varying degrees.

It would be really cool to drill one of the Cummins plugs out and make it accept a 1/16" NPT fitting. Or, even better, braze on a -4AN.

I wish I knew the Cummins part number for those plugs... I'd give it a try.

Sent a PM to Mr Donnelly and ...

The Cummins part number is 3932302. Haven't orderd one yet but might get to it tommorow. By the way the article I saw this in was on the identifying blocks issue 60 page 22. Ken Irwin

Thanks! That saves me from having to call the local Cummins shop. I couldn't locate the part number on the Quickserve site.

I forgot to come back and post - I called the local Cummins shop. These things are $23 a piece!! For a little plug with an O-ring!!

I didn't buy one. I wanted to get a handful to experiment with different ways of drilling them for pressure fittings. No way at $23 each.

I'm sure out there somewhere is a supplier that makes these for Cummins very cheap. But I'm not sure where to start looking.

Man, I wish I had a lathe. :(

On edit: McMaster-Carr has a ton of these types of plugs for very cheap... but not in metric thread!!! Grrrrr... . lousy metric system.
