I blocked my wastegate with a 1/8" plug. I re-used the pipe plug from the intake manifold removed to iinstall my boost gauge line.

IMHO, I don't feel a bleed elbow or obstructed line (ball bearing, bb, etc) are accurate enough for true boost control.

turbo housing

i bought a non-wastegated housing and installed it. i don't have a pyro but my mech says tremendously less heat. $125 and slide the exhaust a lil closer

There is no point in blocking the wastegate. You will get no more power unless you increase fuel delivery at the same time. Remember power = fuel & ox. More ox without fuel doesn't do anything.

I gained about 2psi when mine was stock by unhooking the wastegate. Then a buddy at Cummins said they unhook them on all their trucks. Said they don't need it at this altitude. He was talking about the 12 cm. The wastegate is also a drive pressure relief. I'm guessing it's needed on a 12cm at lower alt. Craig

The amount of EGTs dont go down a lot, they are slower to rise and will be about 150 deg less overall. If you have increased fueling then get a EGT gauge if you want to keep using the same engine for any length of time. Especially if you tow its a must.

Look in my gallery to see what a blocked wastegate leads to... Although I wanted to PIERSify my truck, this was not the manner in which I wanted to do it. Block the wastegate, be ready to call Piers. . Wanna see more pics than what would fit in the gallery, PM me with an Email Address... . Y'all will change your minds REAL quick!

Its best to adjust the gate. Adjust the shaft. Make shorter. I also have washers where the gate is mounted that helped to shorten some more. I went from 22 to 28 psi. Which is exactly where I want it.

28 is a good number, I must agree... . my PDR HX40 is set at like 44, but I was hoping they would set it at 35 max... . on my HX35 I blew up, I had a boost elbow on there, but it was a crummy one and was more of a wastegate plug. No good there... Oh well, we live and learn!

O. K. how do you adjust the gate? Pictures? I have 350 HP injectors installed, Pyro installed etc. I understand more air doesn't do anything without more fuel. I have the fuel. In fact, when I push down, black smoke billows out. Sooooooo, more air required? Pics would really help as I'm a total novice. Thanks in advance. 96 Turbo dually.

If you look at the wastegate. You will see a a shaft that is threaded part way with a locknut and adjsuting nut.

I pulled the wastegate off to do this. Also my wastegate had blown up too. Illflem sent a used to me. So I decided to experiment with it a little. I loosened up the locknut. I adjusted the shaft as short as I could get it.

When I reinstalled it. I stuck in a couple washers on where it bolts back on. That also will help create more resistance to open.

Then the boost tube that runs from the afc. That also can be modified. I stuck a steel pin with a tiny hair pin hole in the rubber hose that connects to the afc to the boost tube that goes to the wastegate.

Pretty much all I wanted it to do increase the resistance for the gate to open. Wich inturn increases boost psi.

The steel pin with the tiny hole will delay the gate. Just slows it down but will function.

When I step on it I hit about 32 to 34 psi right away. Then will come down slowly to 30 psi as the engine rpm climbs over 2 to 3 thousand.

No I don't have any pictures. Just crawl underneath and take a look. Easist mod I ever done.

blocking the gate is fine if you don't make more boost than you should...

on an HX35, up to about 35, you're golden.

I blocked mine by adjusting my boost elbow all the way in till the signal to the gate was blocked off.

you need boost to cleanly burn fuel and keep EGT's down...

OVERboosting generates heat and can cook the turbo center... but 35psi on an HX35 isn't overboosting... if you're wastetating it to less than that, you're working against yourself IMHO.

Thanks very much Forrest and Jeff. I'll do my homework. My boost gauge will go to 30 plus, (no numbers higher than 30) I have one other problem. The tag (numbers)on the turbo says, according to a Turbo fellow, that's it's basically a stock turbo. Even though, when I purchased the truck at 41,000 miles, the owner gave me paper work and said the truck had the banks system on it. The side of the truck says, Banks Power. Plus I did get warranty package with the truck from Banks. Only problem is I have no idea what they did. The original ower said the installed Banks system was around 3200 bucks. I know the exhaust is larger and perhaps the intercooler is different, but not sure. Plus there are gauges, EGT and boost gauge. Any ideas fellas. Thanks again.

follow the boost signal line from the turbo over to the fuel pump. there should be a little brass elbow with an adjustment screw... boost is increased by turning that screw clockwise to reduce the amount of signal that reaches the wastegate actuator.

they come with a little allen head set screw, but I replaced mine w/ a regular hex head bolt that's a little longer. a little locktite keeps it from backing out.

there's a good chance that your turbo is stock, but the turbine housing is aftermarket (a little larger)

oh yeah, it might be time for a boost gauge that reads a little higher ;)

wow this subject is as contreversial plate or no plate i am pushing 40 psi i think plug it back in i would push 35 then down to about 32. when i put my 16 housing though ( just laying around to lazy to do it) it will go back up to 40 though wont it?

are you saing you're pushing 40psi w/ the 12cm housing? that number should drop w/ a 16cm housing.

pushing an HX35 to 40psi isn't really doing you any good, and I'm sure driver pressure is getting up there.

gate it down to ~35-36... the truck will actually run harder.

Forrest

The 16 housing should drop boost down to say 35-36 and get rid of some heat too, drive pressures on a 35 are about 1. 5 to 1 or at 40 psi drive would be 60, that drive pressure = about 60 psi of boost on proper built Twins, kind of shows you were Twins shine!

Jim

yea 40 pounds with the stock housing i already pluged the wastegate back in, like i said i have the 16 housing waiting to put it on. another question i eventually plan to put some cut DVs on with the 16 housing will i be overboosting the turbo again.
