I was driving home from elk hunting yesterday and I had my vent knob on the feet only position and all of a sudden it started blowing air out of the defrost vents. Now the switch placement does not matter, all the air comes out of the defrost vents !

Anybody have a clue?

Thanks . HOV.

One of two things. Pull off the knob and see if it's shot. The center post sometimes breaks so that it will just turn around the shaft and doesn't turn it.

The other possibility is that the pull wire has come off the air door in the duct. This is kind of a PITA to get to. Disconnect the batteries or you might trip the air bag. Remove the knee bolster. Remove the attachment bolts and lower the steering column. Be careful about the ground clip and don't forget the %$#@!&^! little wire on the shift indicator handle. Remove all the little screws that fasten the dash just below the windshield. The ends of the dash assembly are fastened by screws that act like a hinge if they are loosened. Pull the dash back so you have access to the top of the header/AC duct. That's where the pull wire attaches to the lever that works the air duct.

Fixing it might not be easy. If it just slipped off it will probably do it again if you just replace it. I found a push on nut at the hardware store that worked.

Be careful, I might have forgotten something.

Thanks Joe , I wish that I had dealer that I trusted to let them work the warranty but they probably would tell me that my three guage dash mount caused the problem and they wont do the work under warranty. Plus then they would see my power edge and put me on the never talk to black list!!!!!

If it's still under warranty I would whine and carry on until they fixed it. It really IS a PITA to do if it's not the knob.

HOV,
When this same thing happened to me I found the tube that supplys vacuum to the vents had touched the exhaust manifold (turbo)and a hole was burned in it. It's kinda tucked up under the rubber doohicky that has all the wires and stuff under the hood.
I hope your problem is this simple.
Thanks for the reminder as I forgot about mine and it's still running with electric tape on it... ... ... #ad
