Just wondering how many have blown a freeze plug out of the motor!



Looks like I have joined the ranks, blew the back one out today doing some testing.

Jim I'm with ya. I did the same thing a little while back. Luckily it was one on the pasenger side of the block.



My quick (and permanent) fix was to take a spare block heater (freeze plug replacement style) and put it in it's place.



They're held in place with a t-bar on the inside of the block. So it will not come out unless you back the bolt off.

Evey time I spin up above 5500 rpm I lost one. You can stop that by useing red locktite. I also used crawlers fix and it worked. Finaly I just went to an electric water pump and that kept the pressures in check.
 
NEVER. EEP learned how to take care of that years ago, and I'm glad I bought the high pressure bypass system they use when I went with twins in 02.
 
Looked at it last night when I got home and can see you can't reach anything so I'll clean it up and pull the transmission today and prep it.



I was only at 3500 when it let go, first though I lost a head gasket(that didn't make since) it laid over a bit so I got out of it... ... . just spinning tires.



Wes, I'll give you a shout and I'll be watching about for that by-pass info, I was thinking about JB welding it in unless I could Tig it in :-laf

J. R. has a pretty good way of eliminating excessive water pressure(and blown freeze plugs)... just clip a couple veins off the water pump.

Wes, I hope we don't pop one through the wall of Jim's (Jones) shop on the dyno :eek: If that t-bar blockheater lets go, I think Emory will be wiped off the face of the earth :D
 
Blew mine out! :eek: It wasn't a pretty site. :( Pushed the rear gasket out the freeze blew out and snapped the cam all at the same time. :{ :{ :{ But its back on the road again. Oo. Oo. And i saved alot on my car insurance switching to gyco. :p
 
it is typically caused by too much pressure in the cooling system.



either by pressurizing the system (head gasket)



or by high revving and pushing too much fluid with the factory water pump. These things were desighned to run at 2500-3000 not 5500-6000 rpm.





Two easy fixe are clip some of the fins off the factory pump (which has worked great for us and shown no ill affects on normal daily cooling) or gut the factory pump and put a seperate water pump setup on the rig. Meizer makes some nice stand alone units that work real well.

Yep, Jim, I've done it! :( Thanksgiving, WOT on the highway. Blew coolant all over the truck that was trying to catch me... Also thought it was a head gasket until I had it torn down. What a PITA! I now live in paranoia of it happening again and gotta get it really fixed. :{
 
Well I have it washed off, drying and up on jacks to start pulling the transmission. Ponci told me about the plate so I'll look into that but I would still like to tig the plugs in... . :) Without a doubt I'll JB weld that rear one then get the others the next time I have the Twins off. I go for the water pump clip too.



Look at the bright side, I don't have to drain teh water out of it.

transmission, bell housing ect are out now..... not to bad on the time for a rookie and limited tools. The transmission came out easier than the first time I pulled it. Even the crossmember came out rather easy..... a right 11 1/2 just knocked it out. Much more room with all that junk out of the way. The plate idea seems like it will be easy to do now, hopefully this will be the last time I have to deal with this. I'll take pictures of the ordeal and have them in my readers rigs.



On a lighter note I was about to service the transmission for the year so I dropped the fluid. The mag plug had a little fuzz on it... ... looks like anti-seize and the converter is nice and DTT blue... ... not black from slippage. Not bad for a transmission that has been in there since Aug of 03' with nothing but a fluid change. Since that time frame I have been over 700 hp... . consistantly!

yepper. I've lost a BUNCH of them out the back. Course I was just using the rubber expanding kind (roll eyes... shrug shoulders) till I got that plate on. Plate has a machined o-ring groove and a rectangular sealing ring. Holding good so far. $75 and didn't have to pull the transmission!

Ahhhh yeah. . Nothing like laying on top of a blistering hot motor trying to wrench in a rubber plug so you can get home. I've got scars from huge blisters up both arms. Not to mention how GREAT that long bolt on the #1 valve cover feels sticking in your belly while you're trying to work. :{



Can someone elaborate on "clipping" the vanes on the water pump? The vanes on that thing are perty dang thick! I'd like to give that a shot once I get some more info. I gotta drain the cooling system and flush it soon anyway.
 
I haven't poped one as of yet (knocking on wood) I like the vien clip idea. What about converting to the NPG+ in the radiator? one of its biggest advantages is way less pressure as its waterless.
