Here's some pics of my head gasket,,,,, lmills was right!!! the popping noise was the head gasket. been like this for almost 6 months.

Gasket was blown between cyl. 4&5 but heres some pics of cyl, 3&6 that show where it was coming ap#ad

All looks good otherwise,, the cyl. walls have a wierd carbon ring though.

anyone with any surefire ideas to keep this from happening again???

im not 100% positive that i got the studs streched out enough before the re-torque and then after some 70+lb runs it let go, thinking of just putting it back together and re-torquing them after a couple days and see what happens.

Aside from the popping, any other noticeable symptons - perhaps in hindsight?

When does the popping occur? Only high boost and "on it"?

And ditto on what Jeff K said - nice pics to educate fellow TDR'ers!

I've done at least a dozen head gaskets on trucks with a TST and BDDL stack.

The combination can be hard on HGs due to the cylinder pressure spikes it generates.

I'd look at my settings on the two, and not get too agressive with them.

Sorry..... this is one time when I hate being right. :-laf. But hey, told ya so. LOL :-laf Better luck this time around. Bottom tap and re-torque at least 3 times to make sure she settles in good. :D And to think, someone said it as just draining the rail :D

JStieger,,, Only popped with the TST stacked & on, wouldnt pop any other time,

syptoms were miss at idle babababa, knocking, occational hard start, a skip when cranking nanaNANAna,nanaNANAna that sounded like a cyl. was dead. it just wasnt that smoooooth cummins crank or idle.

crawler,,, i have since gotten the 4in1 TST and adjusted the timing down to 3* and had no popping but this was on the way to the shop to pull the gasket.

the first time i only put 20-30 miles on it and a guy hates to really lean on it before the re-torque,, probly my bad for not re-torquing after about a week or so.

Did this cut the head or block?

block & head look good, not grooves or indentations. gasket was blown on head side and went through two layers,,, now where did all those little pieces go?????? my bottom torbo is leaking oil on the intake side but im pretty sure its the o-ring.

any thoughs on the cyl. walls? there is the black ring,, it has no grove or biuld up but is there. where the piston tops out is smooth.

You really have to love it when Lloyd is subtle with his digs. :-laf

Scotch Brite scour pads. You can get them at any supermarket or hardware store.

Just BE CAREFUL not to take too much material off and make sure to get all debris from the pads out.

And stay away from the oil (small pen size) supply holes.

I wish my block and head would have survived running six months with a blown head gasket. I put about 40 miles on her before I tore it down and now have to have the head decked because of a grove between 4 and 5. The block is not as bad as the head though here are a few pictures. What to you guys think, is the block run able or does it need some fixing?

Summit, I see no one answered your question but the dark ring is just the smooth cylinder wall where the hone marks have been worn away. That is where the second piston ring tops out and the point of greatest wear for whatever reason. I don't know how many miles you have but I've seen pics of engines under 100k with that ring. My '96 definitely had them when I pulled the head at 386,000.

Hey Cali-600, how deep (or tall?) is that imperfection? Could you lap it? Might take a lot of time and effort, but might be preferable to removing the block.
