Well, there seems to be some coolant leaking out of the side of the ye old cylinder head #ad
how many of you guys have had this problem. I have herd this does happen from time to time and I guess it's my time. I ordered a new exhaust manifold today and I guess I will have to massage the ports while I am in there as well. Well, right after dinner she's coming off.

Is the coolant leaking out in the area around the Thermostat housing?

Mine has leaked there for the last 60K miles. Loose about 1 - 2 cups every 6K miles depending how hard I pull.

Have oil sampled many times with no signs of Coolant. External leak.

One of these days I might have it fixed!

How much boost do you use? I get up to about 42 pounds occasionally. Can get 48 if I push it very hard while towing grades. I have thought about head gaskets... #ad

sounds like to me ye old head has probably got some cracks. Mine did it for about 15k before I changed my head and afer exeeding 300 hp and not even close to pulling the loads ol red one has. Beter get that recon ordered and smooth out that short side radious. #ad
Make more room for MORE fuel. #ad

This head gasket #'s are dc-5011767aa for . 020" thicker and cummins # is 3283339. Hope this helps.
Adam

JJW-ND Yes it is leaking right behind the thermostat housing. Not to bad yet but I don't want to be stranded while on one of my many trips.

dieselburner I never see over 40 pounds of boost. I have herd that the head gasket has been updated for this problem more sealing surface around this water passage. Also Piers said he has seen the block worped in this area as well.

Cummnzpowr NOPE that wouldn't hold me back I just had other engagements for that weekend.

My6 I try to be easy on my stuff he he so there better not be any cracks I will let you know.

How fast are we that have blown heads/gaskets to look at this post. Sorry to hear about it Blair, there is so much work that can be done to the head. It helps!

I hope you are getting the ATS exhaust manifold. It's not much more expensive than stock and is much better. Cummins now supplies the marine grade head gasket which is supposed to help seal. Check the head and block for flatness and clean them very well. You may need to replace the medium head bolts that are near the exhaust, if they won't come up to torque quickly. I suggest torquing all bolts to 120 ft lb.

Hey Joe what is the part # for the marine head gasket. Yes the ATS will go on.

Blair I have that part # at home, do you want stock, or 10 or 20 thou thicker or all three in case you change your mind #ad

While we are on head gaskets . . Piers,Joe... are the 12V's the same as the 24V's?. . I might need a thicker gasket for a 24... JB

If and when I get around to replacing mine. Can you one of you (Joe or Piers) explain what is gain (and/or lost) by going to a thicker head gasket.

Is going to a no-stock gasket only benificial to those who exceed 300hp or is their benifits similar to the 15 degree timing increase for 12V.

I was just going to replace with the best Cummins has to offer but in a stock thickness unless their is something to gain.

Thanks

Thanks for the info Joe. Well the head is off and all looks good no cracks that I can see, I saw where adams was cracked and mine looks fine. I will check the block tomorrow for flatness and start grinding away. #ad

I would like to know also about 24-valve head gaskets. . . maybe I should start a thread on the properly valved forum?

Anyway I want to BOMB with Stage IIIs eventually and an HX40, but want to keep cylinder pressures in check on my ETH. It would be nice to drop C/R down to at least 16. 0:1 or so. How much can 10 or 20 thousandths drop C/R? Are there marine head gaskets available for the 24 Valve?

Thanks, Vaughn

being that the heads are interchangeable I would think they are the same.
One beifiet is piston to valve clearence.
The . 020 thicker lower compression 1. 42:1
Piers says for every point of lower compression people say you loose 20hp.
My opinion is you just made that much more space to get more air in. Of which is good don't you think(lower egts). #ad

Hey adam I think I am going to go with the stock thickness gasket you know me I won't get to carried away with the power I have good self control #ad
. Oh by the way we went to pismo again a couple of weeks ago and the weather was great again. Lets go again soon!
