the head is heavy, probably 180lbs I'd guess, but Blair and I are both similar in size 150 to 165 and we got it off.
You guys should know that taking the head off only took about 2 hours and putting it back on was about 3, gaskets were 110bucks through cummins west and head bolts were 68 bucks. It was required for me to have to port mine for kind off abuse my truck take esspecially with the power I made. The other part was porting, I did mine myself basically "cleaning", esspecially the short side. Then I had a valve job done and in doing so had the valves back cut 10* to increase low lift flow.
In all it lower average crusing 150 to 200 degress. I can really notice the lowered egts when pushing it pretty good at say 110 at 1200 degrees where before I was around 1450.

Well, the porting is coming right along, I have all the bowls cleaned up and all about the same shape. I lapped the valves and all looks good no need for a grind at 55k. Tomorrow I will whip on by the machine shop so the head can be surfaced and I will finish up the exhaust side to match the ATS manifold and it should be ready to go. Hey Adam 1 hour 20 minutes start to head on the bench. Man I wish I weighed 150 pounds I barely make it over 130. I think I will use some help putting it back on though.

Well the port job is all done the head is surfaced and the valves are laped. The head had a . 010 dip in one end but it cleaned up all right. I took a 35 mile drive(California miles at rush hour)to the local Cummins dealer today to pick up the nessary gaskets that were needed which I was told were in stock but no cigar I guess I won't be putting Old Red back together this weekend. That's all for now.

Do the diesel guys ever cc the heads on their Cummins? I know this makes a BIG difference in gassers. Its easy to do and it would seem to me that someone out ther has done it.

bpine,

If you had your head surfaced maybe you should consider the thicker head gasket to compensate for material removed.

Hey Joe pretty small # to worry about don't you think? I am going to use the thicker head gasket to make up the difference as you mentioned radixr. The part that is killing me is that everything is ready to go but no gasket until Monday. Now that I have time to think about it I am going to send out the ATS Manifold and the Turbo housing and get them Jet Hot coated anyone have any suggestions where, I need a quick turn around time because I don't have a lot of patience.

Well the head is back on just waiting for the manifolds and off we go hunting for OLD SICKLY! lol I will bring back up and you know who that will be.

Well the Red Ram is running again!!! Everything seems to be just fine, so far it seems to spool up much quicker but I haven't really hammered it yet. Tonight will be the test I will hook up the trailer and give her a pull I will report when I get back Tuesday.

Wait a minute BPINE! I thought a gasket matched ATS exhaust manifold to the head & a gasket matched turbo to ATS exhaust would give us excessive TURBO LAG? #ad

Well, Joe I found no injectors were needed just an adapter to the 5/8 garden hose, only problem I couldn't see the trailer in tow. #ad
: Just kidding you know me way to conservative for all that. Old Red seems to run real good temps seem to be down 100 or so on a hard pull cruise temps seem to be about the same. Nothing that spectacular but probably worth it since the head had to come off anyway. I will be off to the Dyno soon so we will see!!
