Mon night the truck tossed the input shaft on the way home from work. When it let loose it took out the clutch(1 week old)the collar in the front of the transmission the bearing retainer for the input shaft and the bottom shaft in the transmission. The now free parts went forward into the clutch which preceded to launch the through the bell housing and it also ate the slave cyl. Quick guess 3k plus in parts alone. Ouch. I will be passing on the Mud bogs this weekend. I just don't think the tow truck would make it to far towing my truck. I will post more later.

Sorry Bud,

Bummer. Seems you mentioned that possibility a few weeks ago when we were e-mailing. Were you going to third, or just under power on the street. BTW, your old 215's are working great in my little one-ton.

Good luck, Ronnie

GEEEZ Tom! Sorry dude #ad

Adam had this dilema too.

I, knock on wood have not had this happen to me... yet. Talk to Van Haisly about converting to the 1 3/8" input shaft. Otherwise consider the shot peen stress relieving and cryo treetment.

We are still working on the truck and exploring diffrent options. I'm really looking into doing an eaton fuller super 10 and a divorced np 205 transfer case. I have found one in a 92 freightliner and the junk yard has the transfercase. They want 1200 for the transmission and 300 for the transfer. I'm checking on the other parts such as a mounting plate bell housing starter 14" flywheel and 14" clutch. I will do an eletric compressor and small tank for the range shifts. I will also have to do 3 custom drive shafts. We are also looking at how to get more travel out of the clutch slave cyl. so that it can work the clutch brake, If I can come up with all of this for around 4000 I think that is the way I will go. If not we are rebuilding the 4500 and using one of Dave Mitchells new pulling clutches. I will update later when I find out what this swap is going to cost.

Tom:

I am very sorry to hear about what
happened to your truck!

I was warned about that same item
by Dan Scheid at "Scheid Diesel"
after they did all the pump and
injector work on my truck. I
believe Piers said he had one
go on him too.

Anyway, good luck with the repairs.

heard of similar problem with a very BOMBed (not mine) truck w/ automatic (repeatedly on same truck!)... . therapist had to raise shift points to higher RPMs to get far enough down the torque curve to keep from breaking shafts--maybe you'll hafta save power-shifts to a higher engine speed and do the same thing... . no fun to see that happen, but, as that Brady bunch dad used to say, "maybe we can all learn something... "

Update

I've found the parts to do the swap but at this time I don't have the extra funds. We are guessing 6000 to 7500 range for the swap and the fab work. We were able to save the transmission and just do a rebuild with some new gears. I've ordered one of Mitchell's new comp clutches to try. Full ceramic double disk clutch. $210 for a used bell housing from the juck yard. Dodge wanted 290. Looking into the slave cyl. from standard trans if not its back to the dealer.

Hey Tom, You can get the slave cylinder at Napa for alot less. Also National Drivtrain(Atlanta 877 541 4327,Chicago 800 507 4327, Vegas 888 770 4327) has replacement part for way less that dc. The input shaft was 90 versus 240.
Hope this helps.
Adam

How is your transmission problem coming? I believe the V10 bellhousing is the same, BTW, in case you find one of them. Also check Std. Trans. in Fort Worth (800-783-8726) as I believe they have inputs for 88 and the slave for under 40. If other stuff is bad on your trans, they could take it as a core and send you a complete rebuilt unit. I briefly investigated big truck transmissions and they are hard to fit under the floor, very heavy, expensive, etc. Since Std. has a handle on strengthening the 4500, I'm going to stay with it. It also is plentiful by now for parts. Were you using a solid hub clutch? If so, that may contribute to input breakage because of vibration. I don't know how much of a problem it is on our Rams, but it is known in drag racing, so worth thinking about.

Yes Joe that is what I found out last week also. I talked to standard trans about parts 2 days after it blew. I will be giving their $40 slave cyl a try before giving my dealer $300. Hope to get it all back together and home this weekend. I only put in 138 hours between two jobs last week. 21 hours 6 days a week and 12 on sunday. Not much time to do much elese. I had just rebuilt the mccledo street a week prior to this. I'm trying one of daves new clutches this time.

Well they say that the third time is a charm. transmission has been out three times for repairs. I will post more on it latter. work just called for a 3a tow.

As I was saying I made it 30 miles on the first rebuild and 2nd gear lost 10 teeth and 3rd gear lost 14 teeth. Bak to the shop again. the 2nd time I got it back it lasted a week for 430 miles and 5 gear went out. 5th on the main shaft meshes with another gear on the counter shaft and that is the gear that failed this time. It rounded off all the teeth that hold it to the counter shaft. I picked it up on monday night and drove it for 50 miles to see if it was ok. Took it back in to the shop on tues am to get the braided stainless lines put on and 2 new front calipers to try to fix the break pull. Figured I might as well get it fixed now that I still have a loaner car from mom. I should pick it up on friday. so far the bill is at $4900 and I haven't gotten the price tag for the last fix yet.

Tom,
Could you please tell us your driving habits so we can try to avoid the same situation?
Several people seem to think the only reason it let go was because your clutch had no damper springs, therefore, the engine is continuously hammering the input shaft, weakening it.
I feel there had to be other problems. Maybe a bad transmission right from the factory. Or maybe a certain Corvette that was just too cocky to let go!
What clutch are you going with now?
Thanks,
Gene

I have the comp clutch by enterprise in the truck right now. Yes it was probaly my driving that blew the input but when it blew I was in 5th going up a hill at about 30 lbs of boost and snap grind and the rest was toast. the last 2 times I have just been normal driving and they let loose. Ask me about the clutch after the first of the year so I have some time to put some miles on it.

The truck is back on the street now. Hopefully this will be the last problem for a few months. New clutch is doing fine. It is a little noisey when engauged but I found out that that is normal for this clutch.
