Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Blown Transfer Case!

Well it turns out that the problem with the truck was that the tranfer case disintigrated due to NO fluid. The mechanic said it was bone dry. Any ideas on how this could have happened? Its going to take about three days and $2400 before the new one is in... this is not the way to start the ownership of a new truck!
 
Yea I know it. We have a new one being shipped in. Yea, supposedly the GV is fine. I'm not sure who installed the GV, it was on the truck when we bought it. How long would a transfer case last with no fluid?

And you baoght the truck used thru a dealer? Even used vehicles go thru a PDI (Pre delivery Inspection) and ALL FLUIDS MUST BE AT THEIR PROPER LEVEL! The Dealer is 100% responsible for this.
