I had bought a used blue box about a year ago. It had hardly been used but had been shelved for some time. I installed it on my truck and had called blue chip for some wiring instructions. Some one there had told me that it would not work on my truck do too the fact that it was programmed for an rv or freightliner. So at this time I ask if I could get it reprogrammed for a 2001. And I offered to pay any fee required. He said no It can’t be reprogrammed it is an old style box and the software is fixed. He suggested that I try to get my money back from who I had bought it from and buy a new box. So at that point I just ran it as a 3 wire box with no smoke control. It ran great and I was happy. Then after running it for about a year it quit adding fuel. So I called Blue Chip and ask about repair. Still willing to pay but hoping not too. He said it was out of warranty but sent it in and they will see if we can fix it. I sent it off with a note saying that I use it on a 2001 and if at all possible I would love to use the 4th wire. Later I called them to see the status. He said it was fixed and it would be free also he reprogrammed it for a 2001. Well I was very happy. I paid for the map connector that it needed for the 4 wire which I did not have. At this time I was very happy just puzzled why it could be reprogrammed now but not before even though I had offered to pay for the reprograming. I figured that thay more likely just replaced it with a different on that could be reprogrammed but never asked. So I get it back and install it. This time it fuels then defuels. Which is a totally different problem than it had the first time. So I call and after a few tests Chip says send it in. No call for awhile so I call them. The person I talked to states that it has a problem under the epoxy and is unfixable but is willing to give $200 off a new box. I said I will pass and that is the end of the call.
But what gives? Now I am left to wonder if my box could have been reprogrammed a year ago and some just wanted to make money off me.
Or was it swapped when I sent it in and I just got unlucky with some one else’s broken box?
Any way I guess I was out of warranty to start with so I am no worse off now. And have since bought an edge comp anyway.
Just want to share a weird experience and see if any one knows about the box programming.
