BLUE SMOKE

SOMETIMES on cold start ups I have noticed some blue exhaust smoke. Once I get rollin it goes away. Does not do it when motor is warm. Anybody know what causes this? Didn't do it untill I installed EZ

Might want to check the electrical connections to your intake grid heater. Heard one member mention that his leads were under the battery instead of connected to it, rendering it inoperative. Does your engine slow intermittently (under load from the alternator running the grid heater) during warm-up?

Since I installed 'DD2's,' along with my 'EZ,' my exhaust tip is oozing black soot even underneath the pipe, although no noticable black smoke at WOT! Am I over fueling at low boost? I have my 'EZ' set at the most aggressive setting.

I've noted a decent puff of black smoke from my buddy's 01 ETC on warm startup. Something that my '99 does not do. I'm wondering if there is something different about the ECM program on the 01s...

Grid heater works... searched some threads, from what I understand this seems to be nature of the beast.

The light blue smoke has to do with cold cylinder temperatures. That is why you don't see it after the truck is warmed up. By adding fuel boxes or injectors the situation is worsened due to increased fuel induction and/or altered timing.

Dont know the problem, but here is what colors mean what in your exhaust:
Blue = oil
Black = fuel
White = Coolant/Water
Oil on startup is usually an indicating of valve seals leaking. When the engine is off, oil seeps into the cylinder(s) through the valve seals. Thats why you get the puff of blue smoke. Once the engine is running, what little drips in goes unnoticed. Best way to prove this theory is keep track of how long your truck sits between statups, as long as the weather is warm (At least 60 degrees) the longer it sits, the bigger the cloud of blue smoke will be. It does not really hurt anything. Lots of miles and if your truck sits a long time unused will cause the seals to dry out. 2 ways to fix it. Go to 15w-40 oil (If you are not using it already) or replace the valve seals ($$$). OR, dont worry about it. It cause no harm.

EMDDIESEL, under different circumstances, diesel fuel itself can make black, blue or white smoke:

Black = warm engine but too much fuel vs air
Blue = cold engine, poor spray pattern, etc. or too much fuel in cold engine
White = really cold engine, or waaaay too much fuel, like when an injector fails

I don't think blue smoke in the morning is caused by the engine burning oil. Remember diesel fuel is basically an oil, that is thinner & lighter than engine oil.
