Truck blows a cloud of blue smoke when engine is cold and first started up. Is this normal or is it a problem? Seems to run fine at all times. Any suggestions?

Not to question you, but is it really blue or is it grey. Raw fuel will puff out when started but fuel is grey/black. It will look a bluish/grey but if you are back there when it starts you'll see that it's probably black when it first comes out the exhaust. You didn't say how many miles. Are the rings seated? Have you towed a load to really work the engine and break it in. Smoke puffs on cranking up are normal. If it's running fine otherwise, then you aren't getting air in the system.

Its totaly normal mine does it too and I also asked the same question about 6 months ago. As soon as it warms up it goes away.

Thanks for the input guys. Im new to this diesel ownership thing and any time I see grey/blue smoke I think its time to worry (wrong). The trucks got about 5k half towing 5000 lbs. The only complaint Ive had was the first oil change was a real Grunter (oil filter on so tight took alot of grunt to remove) also read that this is normal. Thanks again John

i had the same problem my truck has 31K on it and Randy from daves diesel in muncie,in said that my lift pump is starting to go out so he said to get a new lift pump for it. i pull a 11,656 gvw

fifth wheel when i got my truck which is a 2500 24v 5spd 4x4 lwb

i towed the trailer the second day got . so do a pressure check on your lift pump.

Me too.

John,

I have the same thing. It looks like my garage is on fire the first start of the day. I don't have it if the block heater is plugged in. That coincides with the opinion I got on this site previously that it's just cold cylinder temps. The thing that bugged me about it was that it seemed to happen all of a sudden - it didn't start doing it until it had about 2500 miles on it.
