Thanks for the info guys. Well the climate here in Colorado is strange. During the winter Yes we see snow. . and yes they put salt on the road. But for the other 3 seasons it is pretty dry. Colorado has actually started putting down this magnesium Cloride (i think??) fluid so that they don't have to use the sand and salt mixture any more. Do you think that this new fluid stuff will contribute to rust??

Just wondering.

Extreme1 - After reading through this post. . and knowing that we do have salt on the road during the winter... I may go ahead and sell it... shoot me an e-mail

Regarding the factory exhaust exhaust being stainless steel: The Federal govement in the mid 90's made it MANDATORY that all emissions systems (Exhaust is part of that) MUST last 5 years or 100,000 miles (including diesels). So manufacturers went to stainless steel instead of the bare steel used in the past To get more longevity. It is cheaper to use low grade stainless steel then it is to aluminize regular steel. BUT, it is not the same stainless steel used by banks or Borla. It is a much lower grade (Cant remember the grade off hand). That is the reason why DC used stainless from the factory.
So dont worry about the Jardine, use it, enjoy it and dont waste your money and buy another exhuast made of stainless steel so the exhaust that you cant even see unless your lying on your back under the truck wont look bad. 6 or 7 years from now if you still own the truck, you can buy another Jardine kit and you still will have paid almost less then 1 stainless kit.

K_Arts,

Keep the Jardine! They have a LIFETIME warranty on them! Jerry Jardine has been in the exhaust business for 37 years! Not many can say that! He will be here to make sure that you are a happy customer.

FWIW I'm going with the aluminized steel, and I think Michigan has to be the state that uses the most salt. I sure seems that way.

Here is my opinion: I can buy 2 entire exhaust systems for the price of one stainless (or at least it must be close, maybe not). I figure the aluminized steel, on a diesel will last a minimum of 5 years. And the parts that I have found to rust most often here in the great salt state of Michigan are the mufflers (and typically it's from the inside out. I think it has more to do with the cool temps in the winter allowing more condensation to form after shutting down the truck with a warm exhaust, not the salt itself). The muffler I put on my truck was $60.

IMO I'd rather "let it ride" on parts like the exhaust instead of "pay the inscurance". I'll take my chances replacing a muffler sometime down the line. I think the downpipe will be fine wrapped in header tape and sprayed with high temp silicone coating. The tailpipe is the last item not addressed that is rather pricey, MAYBE I should have sprung the money for a stainless tailipe?

Oh well. I'm comfortable with my choices, and you must be comfortable with yours. Best of luck to you on selecting a new exhaust.

Guys, another consideration in favor of aluminized steel is the fact diesels emit far less moisture than gassers, so exhaust systems should not deteriorate as fast since there will be less moisture working on it from the inside.

Thanks for the extra info. . guess I'll be installing this Jardine system on my truck and seeing how it works out.

So then as far as having a Stainless tip. I actually ordered the turn down tip with mine. Would it be wise to remove it in the winter time to keep the salt from damaging it?

Kev

To keep your non stainless steel tip from rusting, you can wax it. Every 3 months or so just use good quality wax. It will help keep the chrome looking new. And Jardine has great customer service. Ever try Banks customer service??, HAH!
