Bombed trucks and Snap Idle test?

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Got some Big O employees' attention!

Something i noticed today

We've got emission testing for diesels here in five or six counties that sets the opacity limit at 40 for after '91 vehicles and 55 for vehicles made before '91 in a series of idle to WOT runups.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Seems like it'd take a lot of black smoke to flunk.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN????

I'm glad they don't "Snap Idle" test in CT. Reason is the 3000RPM governor springs. The tech will say "your governor will protect the engine" when he mats the pedal and holds it there. The valves are gonna float and I wonder what else can happen?

Valet switch or other manual "throttle stop", also lean the afc way down, it might not get out of its way! :) Depending on how many ponies you have. .

uh-oh ... the state of nevada just decided to collect a bunch more revenue ... gonna have to pass the test here.

Think i'll go get the test & see what up. Slower spooling turbo, insane plate ... :{

Borrow someones dogs when going to the emissions place. The emissions people won't try to drive the truck with the dogs on board. This allows you to control the go pedal.

God I love some things about Ca. Still no stupid diesel tests here!

Just wait. When I see threads like "Great Smoke Stories" full of guys bragging about fogging other motorists, bicyclists, & pedestrians, you can bet that some of those people are pi$$ed enough to call and ask why that would be allowed. Even without such direct attacks, there are lots of posts about guys trying to set their trucks up to make as much smoke as they can. Don't think for a second that it will all just go un-noticed. I feel with the increased popularity of diesels, and more smoke from a larger percentage of them, regulation is not in the too distant future for everybody.

Yeah, it's only the result of a legislative oversight in CA. They do require commercial fleet trucks be tested for opacity and have since 1992, and there are mobile test stations that can flag down any truck to be tested, though they stick to class 8 so far. But if there's a new way for a congress to squeeze more money from the people they seldom miss the trick for long. It could be in the works right now.

I went through that snap test this summer and failed with a 42 on my previous 96 12 valve with a re-calibrated pump. When I went to shop that had done the mods they said for $70 they would get it to pass emissions, or for $0 they would tell me how to do it. They said

not to snap the throttle as fast and to put my toe under the throttle so it would limit rpm to around 2600. The first time they have you do the snap tells their computer what to expect for max rpm for the rest of the snaps so practice a couple of times before you get their.

When I retook the test my number was 7.

To make your truck pass the snap-idle test:

1) Back off the 'high idle screw' so that no matter who's driving - they won't be able to go past XXXX rpm.

2) 'Adjust' your boost signal line going into the AFC housing - make it nice and loose... . or take it off so that the AFC doesn't move at all.

Even the most heavily fueled trucks should pass the 40% opacity test with the above recommendations.

Yep - I can see it coming with more and more diesels the state is loosing money as less folks visit the DEQ bank. Oregon has a 8500gvw limit right now but I can see it going up so it can collect the $$$

Go look at your throttle linkage on the back of the pump - where you adjust your idle.

You will notice that there is an idle screw..... and a 'high idle' screw for adjusting the maximum throw of the lever.

You can screw this out so that the lever doesn't has as much 'throw'. It has been a while since I've looked back there... . but there is a screw.

The 3kgsk will not affect the setting of the high-idle screw. Some trucks may require removing/replacing the OEM screw with a longer screw... .

:-laf Good idea

I talked to Mark at Pier's about this stuff and found out that B. C. has the same test required every other year. He said that they get 500 hp trucks through the test by moving the AFC housing back and the AFC screw back too. It'll help to move the plate back while you're at it. I asked about one of their valet switches for it and he said that that would help too but probably wasn't necessary. Then I told him that I had 3k springs with their heavier springs and wondered if I should limit the rpm as well. He said that I needn't worry about it. It would be good to drive the truck hard before the test to make sure it's hot and clean.

I've passed every year with 370 injectors and my plate full forward. Offer to do the test yourself and they'll let you every time. Ease into the go-peddle and you pass easily. This is a stupid test that I have to take every year to the tune of $29.

10-4 on stupid test,Todd.

It's measuring light transmission isn't it? Similar to the percentile levels of window tint that people apply to glass? If so 40% tint is mighty dark, and that equates to a whole lot of smoke.

HemiDart,

I went thru emissions a month ago. I did a quick "de-tune" the day prior (rotated the fuel cone to stock).

Took it to a place in Bethlehem... . the only place I could find within a reasonable distance that would let me watch & listen. The testing guy does not believe in "snapping" the throttle very much. He went to maybe 1500 rpm max.

I had a reading of 1. 5 out of 40. .
