It's a pain to get at - but if you screw it out... . it's just like a throttle stop on a drag car... . you're only going to get so much throttle play and then it's going to stop.

After the test... you could screw it in and have some fun.

im in cali and have heard of mobile snap tests being done out in the valley. it will be a mandatory thing here in the not so distant future. you 12v guys have it made..... us 24v guys are going to be forced to swap injectors. not a big deal, but takes a little longer than farting with the AFC wheel... . whatever the hell that is:cool:

24-valve guys are not *forced* to yank injectors.

All they have to do is 'hack' into the can-bus. :D

As for shimming the 'go-pedal' - sure... . putting something under the pedal would do the same thing, but playing with the pump is much more fun. Plus you get to learn how to play with the high idle screw so that you can turn it in for 'off-road' usage. :-laf

jump test

An other thing that you as a customer must be aware of is, the tech doing the test does not look at any of your gages on your dash. He is looking at the computer screen. SO you EGTS go to the limits, you do not want someone else doing that IN YOUR RIG --RIGHT!!!!! mine just reached the 1200* mark when he let off, and just about was to tell him about it. Then made the comment that i had done a little some thing to the engine, to be able to hold 20# boost. I can do 32# pulling my trailer on a grade, but don't, usually maintain 22# and control the EGTS.

So make the appropriate adjustments before taking it to the FOGG store.

just my penny's worth.

I take it these tests are done on a dyno?

ez on 1x1 will help if you can limit boost.

If its not done on a dyno, shouldn't smoke at all.

maybe another boost elbo that lets the wastegate open and limits boost to 10psi. or better yet an adjustable one. yeah that would work.

10 psi comp or ez on 1x1 should equal 0 smoke, or at least minimal.

Our tests are done with the truck in neutral. No boost at all. I asked what would happen if the motor threw a rod and the tech said "It won't happen, the governor will protect the engine". I am a bit afraid of putting in a GSK for this reason.

Great ... as if a gross plate & slower spooling turbo weren't enough ... 4k gov springs :{

Oh well, that's what beefier valve springs were for. :D

Worried about over-revving your engine with a GSK? Hogwash!

Two words: Throttle Stop

Even if you shimmed your governor and could spin your engine to 6000rpm... . a throttle stop (choose your own method... . ) will prevent it from revving past your own set-point.

Snap idle test = no load

No load = no fuel

No fuel = no damage

"a throttle stop (choose your own method... . ) will prevent it from revving past your own set-point"

That's right and they won't be looking for higher revving diesels. When I went through with stock truck I sat in the cab with the guy flapping his arm up, then down over and over maybe ten times while I throttled up then down along with him. There was no dyno or tach that they attached, only a tailpipe gadjet that I never got a good look at. My '98 12 valve will have to go whenever I get around to registering it - it's in primer in the shop now and it's too cold to paint.

The truck is no longer stock, but I think that with the plate backed up and a little homemade cap on the throttle stop it'll pass with flying colors. 40 whatevers is a lot of smoke I hear, so I think it'll be hard to flunk. No big deal.

KRS: Well done!

The smoke measuring gadget is about as uncomplicated a device you have ever seen. All it does is measure the opacity (with a cheap optical sensor... ) of the exhaust gas... . or how deep/dark the smoke is.

40% opacity is a lot of smoke... . it's REALLY easy to get even a modified truck to pass this test.
