One mean pulling machine!
Just some info about my experiences with upgrading a sickly diesel! This may be of interest to you heavy pullers. I have a 99 Quad cab 4X4 with a posi. The first thing I did after I bought my diesel and tried to pull the pass leaving Nevada at about 35mph towing 8000lbs. was to puke. My wife even got a little sick! I bought this truck to pull. I shortly went to BD Dyno days and had them add an exhaust brake. Wonderful addition! Next I towed that old trailer to Alaska. Not enough Power! On the way home I had BD add 275 injectors. I went from 164 hp at the rear wheels to 205 hp. Nice folks! I thought I was in love. I then went home via Kellogg Idaho, and Dave Smith Sales, where I was recommended to see DR. Performance. He told me that it was my lucky day. He would save me from ruining my engine and reinstall my factory settings, although he really shouldn’t do it. He was really amazed that we were able to make it from BD to his place and he was going out on a limb to deliver us from that awful fate known as VOIDED Warranty. He told my wife and I that those old 275 injectors just sprayed the fuel in a bad pattern and that it would wash down the sides of the pistons and ruin the engine. With the blessing from my wife (as he had her scarred) and just $3200. 00, I was in business. Did you ever buy something and not know what you were being shown. He dyno’ed my truck and said that I had about 280hp after his secret injector and ECM fix were installed. Oh contraire , Not so, as I have shown those runs to some real professionals and they said that the only time I hit 280hp was on the transmission shift. Pretty sad so far! I Can’t trust DR. Performance.
I next added the BD PLUG’N’Power which I bought at Diesel Specialist, in Las Vegas, for approx. $790. 00,( the sprit of Jessie James lives on in that part of town). They, as a BD distributor, installed it in my truck. This did pep it up but it also gave quite a bit of smoke at low RPMs
My next move was to visit BD at one of their Dyno days get togethers in April. They analyzed my rig and found that the opacity with the DR Performance, Phase 111 injectors was 17. 8 . I then had them switch back to the 275 RV injectors, this was the second time that I paid for them, and the opacity went down to 6. 3. The bad news: The dyno Hp with the DR Performance and Van Aken was 300 to the rear wheels. After switching to the 275’s I dropped to 290 hp. What to do? I had a larger turbo housing (14 cm2) installed along with a boost fooler made by Blue Chip and a calibrated boost elbow. This gave me 310 hp and 25 lbs. of boost. I still got some smoke but not nearly as much as with the Dr. Performance injectors.
I next bought a new fifth wheel, which with my truck, weighed about 20,000lbs.
Naturally, I next had problems with the torque converter. I finally came upon what I consider one of my best investments. It was a Dunrite Torque converter, with lockup in first and second gear. I realize that Bill Kondolay doesn’t agree, but I’m talking about what works for me. When I lost my transmission, in of all places, CANADA, I had his valve body and pressure lock installed, and yes, by him.
That darn Joe Donnelly tried to, and did, lead me astray by getting me to buy a TST PM-3 remote controlled box for my little truck. All I ever wanted to do was just pull my fifth wheel in some sort of fashion. Well, now I have about 400 hp on the ground and can’t figure out what to do with it! It definitely will pull my fifth wheel though. The best part is that I haven’t been able to break that old torque converter loose. I love that PM-3 because I can go back to level 3 and still get great mileage. I recently got between 11. 8 and 12. 8 on a trip between southern Cal and Nevada with a combined weight of 20,000lbs. I love it.
I can put it on level 9, fully loaded with 2 people and tools and spin those tires with a 4X4 with Posi.
I did remove my muffler and but in a Geno’s straight pipe. I also had BD install gauges after which I drilled and installed a second sender for the exhaust manifold. I installed a little relay and a switch so that I could read my pre and post turbo temp and my input and output transmission temp.
I use a BD auto/torque lok which I set at 21 mph and I can lock it up in any gear. It’s great when you come up behind a big slow truck on a hill and have to slow down. I just shift to second and lock it up.
I guess the moral of this story is that all of the companies have valuable offerings.
Just tread carefully.
Bill I think you are a nice guy and please don’t take this wrong, but what works, works! Every body doesn’t need the same thing. I’m just sick and tired of hearing about mine doesn’t lockup!
