Bombing a Dial-up connection

Any of you guys using anykind of program that will speed up your download times while using a modem and dial-up connection? If so, I am looking for some recommendations and any information on whether these programs actually work or not. Currently, I am connecting at about 42,000 bps.

42K... I'd count your blessings and call it a day. Just because you are connecting at 42k doesn't mean you will transfer at 42k. Also, even though your modem is rated at 56k you will never connect or transfer faster that 53k. That is federally mandated.



You want speed? DSL, Cable, Microwave, two way satellite. Hell of allot faster, but you got to pay to play. Kinda like our trucks!

I don't think you have nothing to complain about. I'm connected at 9600 right now highest I've seen it is 21600. We live in the country and out phone lines are not that good

DSL

In this city of nearly 40,000 in an area of 100,000+ polulation, we FINALLY got DSL in our area (but no cable yet). I recently signed on with the local phone company, Qwest, who uses MSN for the ISP. The cost is $39/month including MSN and the modem & setup was no-charge (they say it was a "special" they had going on, who knows). Boy what a big difference over dialup!! I'll NEVER go back. I love being able to download all those awesome burnout videos in a few short minutes vs. tens of minutes. You can open up 2-3 windows and download different stuff simultaneously, and still surf at the same time with faster page loads than dialup. I have the slowest speed service (256K).



I read an article recently comparing cable and DSL services, both technologies are pretty similar in performance, cost and bandwidth-wise. You can use the same phone plug for both the phone and modem. In my old house I'm surprised it works as well as it does considering the phone wiring is at least 40 years old.



MSN rocks over AOL by the way.

Years ago, when dialup was the most common, there were programs that matched the packet size between you and the ISP, to maximize speed transfer.



I don't know if that's an issue anymore or not.



It was when I ran mine, but I set my equipment to work with the windows default, which seemed to work great.

Change your setting for dial up with tweakmaster

Go to PCmagazine.com or somewhere and download tweakdun or weakmaster. In will allow to reduce your packet size from 1500 which is the windows default for Lang (dialup too) to 576. Your connection speed will not change, but your through put can double for manu types of downloads.

tweakmaster is free for 30 days, tweakdun was free for ever, but i can't find it any more. If you get your set up right you only need 30 days. or pay the $19. 95, I think you'll be happy.

The program I've used on both my dial-up and my ADSL connections is Dr. TCP

It worked for both. Just make sure to check your speeds before and after. Sit down and do it all at one sitting so as to reduce error due to system load changes, time of day/night etc.

If you are stuck with land line and do not have access to DSL or cable then the only option for speed I know is to go with a satellite receive system. You receive from the satellite and send over a land lines (modem). My brother-in-law has this setup and it works pretty well. Price is not bad either.



A few places around here have set-up community wireless services.



I'm fortunate to have cable service. The only problem is that the kids are getting bigger and we fight for the computer. Time to get a second workstation and get a router to share connection.

Thanks for all of the replies. This is the only internet connection that I have ever used. So I really didn't have any other connections to compare it too. I will probably leave well enough alone since cable or some other service is not an option. . What started this is I stumbled accross a Program called "Internet Turbo" and it stated that it could increase your download speed. Well I downloaded it and installed it and I never noticed any difference. I will just let the free 30 day service expire.
