Just installed my power edge ez a few days ago. I like the extra power, but a little leary about installing the boost elbow. Question; will the small hole on the side of the elbow draw in unfiltered air, or is there always pressure on it? (even when decelerating?)

put it in-- you have nothing to worry about, except more boost, which is no worry-- just more miles with bigger smiles---chris

what in the???

ok, this is a stupid question from a new member. I know about all the different fueling boxes, but what is a boost elbow, and how much do they run??? I did a search on it, and came up with nothing.

Thanks,

AJB

I have a boost elbow brand new you can have, it wont work with a hardlined wastegate though, which is probably what your truck has. In that case, you stick a . 22 shell in the wastgate actuator tube. But after alot of research talking to places like DIS and Jannetty there is no need to disable the wastegate unless you have alot more then injectors and an EZ since supposedly 20psi of boost is fine for engines up to 350hp. According to them, there is NO gain in power disabling it with just the EZ. More boost will help lower EGT's to an extent, but even that is limeted. You also risk getting an overboost code. I am going to try Kat Diesels idea of slowing the wastegate down using a spring instead.

You should put it in. The new elbow actually has a smaller hole than the stock one, thus not putting as much pressure on the wastegate valve (psi x area of hole) (I think?), so it doesn't open up (dump off) as quickly.

The increased boost definately helps the power. My first EZ box was not adding the fuel correctly, but still gave the truck quite a kick, just by the higher volumes pumped into the engine.

The increased boost also helps keep your EGT down. Adding fueling alone can heat things up in a hurry.

This has been said many times, but I disagree that you don't need an elbow with the addition of mild injectors or boxes. This is based on tests that I and another member conducted - here is a description of each and the results: Installed 275HP injectors in a 99 2500 QC 4X4 5-speed 3. 54. 1500-3000rpm tests were done to compare results. Totally stock times averaged 12. 7 seconds (3 or 4 trials per average - I can't remember which). 275's only - times average 11. 7 seconds. 275's w/ elbow and boost module - 10. 5 seconds. Definite improvement even with the mildest of HP upgrades - as a matter of fact, more improvement with the addition of the 275's and elbow, than the 275's by themselves!

Now I agree that all the boost you can get (which is what most elbows give you) is sometimes too much, but an increase in air is needed with EVERY increase in fueling.

Also, if you install ONLY the elbow, with no Boost module, performance will decline b/c ECM will "see" additional boost (i. e. , over-boost) and cut fuel - tested this one while doing the above tests.

I think ya all misuderstood my question. My boost elbow came with a tiny pin hole machined in the side of it. and i'm wondering if it is possible to suck in unfiltered air through that tiny hole

d Bronec,

You want to be real careful, Be specific and only ask one question at a time. If you leave any kind of opening the next thing you know some of the Bombing Addicts will be disscussing the BTU difference of #2 Diesel and a barrel of JP3 that has been sitting in some brother in laws garage since Regan was still working with monkeys. (the ones in California).

CSutton, You forgot BOLD LOL

David,

As Chriss pointed out, NO, the pressure is always one way going through that line where the boost elbow goes, and air can never enter it. Believe me, that little elbow will make a phenominal difference. I didn't even get one with my boost module and DD 3's, and when a TDR member (Bob Wagner, if I remember right) sent me one for free out of the great kindness commonly seen on this site, I was able to get my HX35 up to 30#'s boost easily, and the :D's increased accordingly!!!

When I had DD install my HX40, I took the elbow off the HX35 and installed it on the HX40, and it also increased my :D factor.

Install it, push the truck up a good, long hill to see the difference for yourself, and you can always take it out easily later if you want to.

For those with the Adjustment Set screw in their boost elbow. Have any of you adjusted it in and noticed any performance gains or losses?

I dont think a boost elbow will work with a 2001 truck. I know mine has a hard line that cant use the Boost Elbow. They told me to stick a . 22 shell (EMPTY!!!!!!) in the metal boost line to plug it. Does anybody with an 01' have a wastegate actuator hose?

my 01. 5 eth/dee w hx35 turo has a brass ell and hose

My 01. 5 ETH/DEE has a rubber hose and a steel elbow. The EZ supplied brass elbow fits fine but I would prefer an adjustable bleed hole in the elbow. Just want to tinker with it :D Some 01's were hardlined, guess I got lucky.

I have adjusted my boost elbow. I was peaking at 38 PSI now I am peaking at 28 PSI. There is an improvement in top end power from lower turbine drive pressure and cooler intake air.

Here is the scoop on turbo wastgate actuator lines.

2001 and newer automatics have the HX-35Y with the hard lined wastgate actuator line

All 5spd, 6spd, and 2000 and older automatic trucks have the

HX-35W with the brass elbow and rubber hose for the wastgate actuator line. These are the turbos that facilitate boost elbow installation.
