Boost Elbow!!??

Ok I have done some searches and not found the answer to my question. What is this boost elbow some of you are putting on? Also I see that a lot of you start out with and Edge EZ should I do the same or jump straight to one of the higher ones? How do all the boxes rate? I have seen Vanguard, TST, Diablo Sport, BD, Banks, and several other ones. Please shed some light for me. Thanks to everyone in advance.

I used the boost elbow provided with PE EZ. I think they're pretty much the same since most of the newer ones are not ajustable. You can also purchase a boost elbow from Practical solutions for around 12. 00 or so.



I believe the best route to take in in bombing direction or addiction would be to get a PE Comp. You might want to not hook up the wire if you don't want to pierce the injection pump wire which would make it like an PE EZ. However, you'll probably find you really do "need" more power and you can hook up the little wire.



I kind of wished I would have gotten a PE Comp, but that will have to wait until I upgrade my clutch.



Also, might want to consider some mild injectors like DD1's or DD'2.

Bigstick, I re-read my post and realized it was biased toward

Power Edge. Other boxes are good too. It really comes down to personal preference. Ask a lot of questions before you buy.

Bigstick, you can't use a elbow on your 01, you will have to go the turnbuckle route, the elbows are for the 2000s and older trucks.

Actually, he can use the boost elbow on his truck, since it's a ETH/DEE it has the flexible line that will accept the boost elbow.



I've got an '01 ETH and I used the elbow that came with the EZ.

bigstick i dont think anyone really answered the question about the boost elbow, so here goes. On the compressor side of your turbo (aluminum half closest to front of truck) there is a brass 45 degree fitting that is connected to a short piece of rubber hose. at the other end of the hose is a the diaphram (sp?) that controlls the wastegate. The boost elbow we are using replaces the factory brass fitting. Basically it is just a modified 1/8 pipe to barb fitting that has a restrictor and air bleed hole that limits the boost signal to the wastegate controller. Note that you can not use one of these unless you add some sort of boost module to fool the computer in to thinking it is only seeing @20 psi boost, or you will set overboost code, and the engine will defuel at the higher boost levels.



As far as the ez goes, it is a great box. It is a timing and "minor" fueling box. I has the boost module built in. It simply plugs in to the data link and map sensor plugs on the driver side of the engine. What you need to ask your self is how far are you planning on going powerwise. If you just want a nice kick in the backside go for the ez. It adds about 45 peak hp in your case, but what you will really love is the torque and throttle response you gain down below 2000 rpm. Unbelievable difference.



If you dont care about your warranty and clutch, go for the comp box or another similar "major" fueling box. When we say major fueling box, we are refering to one of the boxes that pierces a wire on the injection pump and adds fueling by holding the vp44 pump solenoid open longer. There are many out there, tst powermax, edge comp box, blue chips and others.



As posted earlier, you could buy the comp box and not pierce the injection pump wire unless you want the additional power later. It is however not quite as quick installation wise and removal (in case you need to see a dealer) as the ez.



In my opinion, on a six speed truck you can not beat bigger injectors for adding the huge power. You will never drive a truck without them once you have. The comp box and diesel dynamics stage 3 injectors will make you go:--) if you need more later, you can always stack one of the major fueling boxes on top of an ez, that is what i did. However, the powermax is off 90 % of the time. I just dont need it running around town. just my . 02 (ok maybe a little more) lol.

Good post Rubberneck . Like he stated, depends on what you plan for the future. If future mods. include a clutch upgrade, which is mandatory with much beyond the EZ box, then go for the Edge Comp. box and leave the VP44 wired untapped until you are ready to smoke the wimpy OEM ETH clutch. Again, like Rubberneck stated, the high flow injectors work real well in the ETH, if the EZ box isn't enough, upgrade that clutch and add larger injectors. Still not enough, either sell the EZ and get the comp. box or add even larger injectors and/or piggyback a box like the TST Powermax to the EZ. You will get to a point real quick after you go beyond the EZ that the egt's are climbing to fast to use all of that HP. Then or better yet, before you get to that point, upgrade to a larger turbo, hog out the fuel restrictions, larger exhaust and a air filter upgrade. As you can see, it gets real expensive. The Edge EZ was my first performance mod. I installed after the gauges and it's a real kick in the pants, all by itself. If you are not looking to go crazy with the BOMB's, I suggest that you try it first.

Some good info here and very timely for me. Late yesterday evening, we installed an ez box on my friends 98 auto. The instructions said something like the truck would run equally well with or without the elbo. I suggested we leave it off and drive it for a few days and then put it on to see if there was any difference. We took it for a test drive and were dissapointed with the performance. He couldn't tell it ran any better. He was out of time so we didn't put the elbo on or check to be sure the box came setup for the highest power setting. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

TST Elbow

Installed the TST Elbow. Boost went from 20 lbs. to 25 lbs. and hits the wall. You can really feel it when it reduces fuel flow. Do not know what the long term effects could/will be. Will watch it for now. Heard it sets the overboost code. Data Link II on the way. Will see what the code for overboost is. :--)

whistleman, the overboost code is number 0234 in the ecm, you will quite often get the 1693 companion code in the pcm as well. I have hit this baby before playing with different boxes/modules.

Rubberneck, 0234 and 1693, thanks. Do these codes have any real effect or, are they just stored until cleared, and will they effect other engine and powertrain parameters? Falls flat on its face @ 26 lbs. boost. Hit that today. Do not pull much. Will attend the DFW Dyno Days on 16 March and have it dynoed. Have only propane and the elbow, runs fine and mileage is great.
