I've had never ending display of "check engine" lights on my '07. 5, 2500 6. 7L. The dealer has told me today that they need to install a new turbo! Thankfully it will be a warranty repair. Has any one else been down this road with the early 6. 7 Cummins? Also considering the installation of a boost gauge to keep a better watch on what's going on. Any recommendations on best pressure scale to use as well as the need to read vacuum pressure?

I have an 08 5500 and there's been a lot said about early turbos... what most of the guys say is to run the truck with the exhaust brake on... and run the truck like you stole it...

We've got 110K miles on our 08 with its real first problem and it looks like something other than a turbo problem... What you should get is the turbo cleaned and tested first before an new one is installed. . if they clean yours and test it, they will install a cleaning port... and you should at some point run the cleaner through the turbo... .

There's lots here about this... just search on the 6. 7 engine sight, clean turbo...

BTW (by the way) welcome to the sight, I see this is your first post since you joined in 08... .

Well I've just spent that last hour reading about the problems with turbos. Yikes! Glad I'm not alone, I think. At one point I talked with the dealer about a cleaning but they were a bit shy having not done it before. Maybe a complete warranty replacement is not necessarily a bad thing. Have to do some more reading here.

Thanks for the reply.

Welcome to the forum.

I have an early 08 built in Sept. 07, bought in Nov. 07. The turbo was drilled and cleaned at 14K miles and I have had no issue with it since. I do run with a boost, EGT and Transmission gauges, since I tow a 5er and an I am now using a Smarty programmer. The programmer was added at 22K miles and I now see mainly 5 to 10 PSI when I am not towing. When I am towing I can see as high as 15 PSI towing when going up a hill.

I would buy a 0 to 60 PSI gauge if you think you need it.

Good luck.
