I have a 01 w/auto and all say to put on a boost pressure gauge. So, why? What are the, what they say, keep in higher pressure range? On my 01 where would I mount on engine and in cab? What is a good brand? Is it all based on not lugging the engine down or what? I try not to anyway. Oh, all my friends have older diesels and the set ups are all different. Mine is a late 01 with 4 wheel disc or so I was told. Thanks, Terril.

I have an 01 also. I bought the Diesel Dynamics/Autometer set-up. Came with eveything you need.

There is a large threaded cap on the drivers side located around the number 5 piston, dd supplies and adapter that threads right into this place. Others have located there's elsewhere.

To me, the boost gauge is more of a diagnostic tool if you are not going to BOMB too heavily.

Terril,

I think you got part of the recommended info. I think your buddies recommended you install boost pressure and exhaust temperature gauges.

The boost gauge is more of a diagnostic item. With tight intercooler hoses and good intake gaskets you'll learn what normal and maximum boost pressure is that your truck developes.

Boost is relative to horsepower... the more power you make, the more boost you make. If your engine developes an air leak you would be able to tell by reading your gauge. Boost leaks also cause a decrease in mileage.

The exhaust gas temperature (EGT) gauge tells you how hot you are getting the air/gasses that are devloped in the combustion chamber and going through the turbo of your engine, and it doesn't matter if you are stock or modified. You use it to keep yourself from burning a piston or turbo, and you also use it to determine when your turbo is cool enough to shut the engine off after driving the truck... wait til the temps get to 300 or below to shut off the engine. Also the EGT gauge is a great economy tool. If you keep your EGT's at or below 600deg while cruising on the highway, then you'll get your best mileage.

You see, these two simple gauges give alot of info, and like I said,it doesn't matter if you are stock or modified.

Don't Forget

They're lots of fun to watch to. Get someone with one of those little rice burning coffie can exhaust having cars to ride with you and when they see that boost gauge go to 34 lbs of boost they about sh!@ their pants. :D

LOL, short story. I was talking with a kid that working on his older Nissan 300Z. We started to talk turbos, I asked him what kind of boost psi's he was seeing, he said around 7. 5 but he was working on a kit that would get him up to around 10. He asked if I have a turbo equipped personal vehicle (I was working at the time), I said "yep". He asked what kind of boost psi's I see, I said " Oh, around 45 or so". His face looked just like this  .

I ordered my initial set of gauges from TST (Boost, egt, and oil temp. ) They work well, except that the egt gauge doesn't have an illuminated needle and is difficult to read at night. The boost gauge goes up to 60 psi's, a bit of overkill for even the most extreme of BOMBer's, but it works well none the less. All the TST gauges are made by DiPricol, here's the link.....

I believe that the boost gauge has been re-badged to read 'Turbo Boost' now, mine reads ' Manifold Pressure'.

Hope this helps.
