What kind of boost can be pushed out of the stock turbo with a non intercooled engine? I can make 32 lbs right now and the EGT's are controllable but the compressor side of the turbo and intake get pretty warm after a hard pull. I'm just wondering if my turbo could be in danger at these pressures?

Thanks for any input.

Yes, stock 'baby' H1C is well out of its map range/efficiency at about 25psi if that. You are just blowing hot air at anything above that. Time for a hx40:D.

Yep. Sounds normal to me. I was at "about" 30 with the stock "baby".

Run it untill you feel the need (ok desire) to upgrade.

You can do a "frankenturbo" or a new one already made up.

Bomb on.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll probably just save up some money and buy an hx35 or 40. What is everyones thoughts on the two? What are the advantages of each?

Thanks again.

You will have a different opinion from everyone on this subject because there are so many variables such as intended use of the truck, hp goals, auto or manual transmission etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

The 35 is one tough turbo and is very versitile. You can upgrade a 35 I don't know how many times and still use the same base turbo. It can be changed into a full 40 if you would outgrow the stage I, II, III, III etc.

A 35 with 16 exhaust housing and 58mm or 60mm compressor will work well for a long time. If you'd out grow that there is a 62mm compressor and you can also change the exhaust wheel to that of a 40. The exhaust housing combos you could experiment with are nearly countless.

OR... ... ... ... . getcha one of them big turbo units like Bill did for $1,200 and hope it works.

And boy does it ;) .

Spend the money once the first time, why up and up and upgrade one turbo... ?? JMO, and yes not everyone has $$$ like Mr. 6 gauger chasing the girls around man from the show me...

Bill, and everybody else out there with under 500 hp... ...

I believe, that it is the general concensious, that unless you are setting right off to build a 500 hp rig from day one, you simply cannot buy a "H2B-66whateveritis" turbo unit. Therefor, one has to purchase upgrades as time and $$ allow for the "other" stuff.

Is it just me or is everybody else out there buying up a monster turbo to run with a mild pump set-up? From the looks of the signatures in this forum, most are buying the base 35 and upgrading acordingly.

One has to understand that your truck may not spool a particular turbo and/or exhaust housing. Sure is cheaper to swap out a very common 35 exhaust housing than to have to buy a gated unit and change that.

Another thing to remember/realize is that you have to figure how much are you going to be driving with your right foot to the floor compared to driving normally??

Bill, Your point is valid and I'm not trying to undermine it in any way. Just want others to think about what's involved... much more than simply buying a turbo.

I agree Scott. A modified 35 OR H1C/WH1C will support a lot of ponies for the BOMBing most of us want to do.

I've been in several trucks that are "about" HTT stage III and in the 360 rwhp range, make nice drivers, have more than enough power to do what needs doin' on a daily basis, and can still pass an emissions test (yes some have this hanging over us).

And as you can see from my signature, my "frankenturbo" has no trouble supporting 15. 6 hp with no smoke :-laf

I will be looking for a turbo which is capable of 300-350 rwhp. I also need the turbo to spool fairly quickly as it is a daily driver and I live at 6000 Ft. Is a 35 capable of what I want? I am happy enough with how my stock turbo spools and I believe my pump is capable of plenty of fuel as turning fuel cone gave me an additional 8 lbs of boost and one turn in on the fuel screw gave another 5 lbs. I want to go straight to a turbo and injectors capable of what power I want and I will tune it afterwards.

Thanks

Yeah I keep forgetting not everyone wants to go wide open/hottttt right off the bat. The HX35 is a tough turbo. And fully capable of yielding 300-350rwhp, although at the top end of that, you'll be driving with your right foot. I guess if you don't plan on going wild, and plan on using the truck as a WORK truck ie pull a trailer etc, use it as it was intended to be used, then the 35 will do fine, with the available upgrades.

With me, my truck will never see a trailer, might haul some wood, dirt, gravel in the bed, but thats it. I just know how it is when we start out saying we only want a few more HP, then the bomb bug hits us. We start down that slippery slope, and end up spending more money. Its inevitable. But of course there are some that have a family to support, mortgages, etc, that can be satisfied with 360rwhp and a HOT pyro.

I'm sure Smokey wants to spend the $$ once. I suggest looking at HTT's HTB2 line. TDR member 'zstroken' is a distributor/dealer for HTT, he can get you a much better price than advertised.

ROFLMAO!!! :-laf

Bill!

When you haul dirt and gravel, don't half the load fall out onto the ground enroute to the house? :--) :p :p :p

I'm sooo witty.

LMAO!!! Yep I figured someone would catch that :-laf . Heck even half the load of wood doesn't make it to the campsite! It's my new weight reduction technique. All those holes in the bed . Got a new one now where the stacks used to be LOL.

I don't know 'bout dat.

not everyone has $$$ like Mr. 6 gauger chasing the girls around man from the show me...

If you heard that I won the Powerball jackpot,... . well, you herd wrong!!!!

Oh, and just for the record, when I finally get around to ordering a fuel pressure gauge, it'll be 7gauges.

Wish I had a big turbo

To stay on topic... Smokey 01, I used to make 32 with my old one, however I am also intercooled. I would imagine that you are making some hot air.
