plumbed in a temporary boost guage last night to get an idea where my boost #'s are, do this sound correct? at idle there is no boost, under normal accelaration about 8-15psi depending on how hard you push it, WOT around 20psi. then I blocked off the wastegate and got almost 30psi WOT. How does all that sound and should I not leave the wastegate unhooked? I have a stock plate that is slid forward. Thanks Chris... ... ...

That's just about what I'm seeing on mine, a 97 w/auto. When I first got it new, at WOT, I was seeing about 18-20 lbs boost. With the 230 TST plate slid forward slightly, I've seen boost at 30-32 psi. I had the plate slidfull forward for a while, but had too much power too quick, at too low an RPM & got slippage. It seemed to run out of power too soon at the higher RPM's too, so I slid it back to a point about 1/16" ahead of the stock position, and can live with it there. It still comes on a little too strong at lower speeds when I'm in lock up, but I deal with it.

Chris,

Those numbers sound fine. Leave the wastegate hooked up. When you move up to a TST plate, a new boost elbow will be part of the kit. This will step up the boost to the 28-30 range.

My 97 with stock plate in stock position and the AFC clicked 20 toward the motor, when I'm pulling hard, mine will run 22-24 lbs. .

racingfanscjww,

Your #s sound about right. One concern, EGTs. I didn't see any mention of an EGT gauge and with your stock plate full forward you might be running excessively hot. Just my $. 02. Good luck and enjoy.

Boost...

The most boost I can get with the stock 160HP cam plate ( with the adjustabale area ground down to the max with minimum metal area, slide all the way forward as far as can be ) is 17LBS WOT, hitting 1200 degrees real fast. I run 650 degrees @ 70 mph @ 1750 rpm's (empty). I look forward to getting the TST 230 or 250 cam plate in the future, but for now I'm pleased. Those gauges make a world of diffrence in keeping your engine alive. ;)

no I don't have an EGT gauge, but until I get one any ideas on how quick the temps can come up under WOT or when I'm pulling the camper, just so I can get an idea when to back out. I have only kept my foot in it a couple of times to feel the power rarely over 5 seconds or so, but when I'm pulling hills with the camper is when I get concerned with the temps. Should I move the stock plate back? or just go easy with the go pedal? thanks.

The EGTs will come up very fast with a hill, load and the plate slid forward. A stock engine is designed to keep the EGTs in check so you can make it though warranty. I personally wouldn't try to guess or anticipate high EGTs. A pyro should be your very first mod, they're cheap compared to a new engine. Your choice.

Emerald, You can buy a boost elbow from Piers that would increase your boost fairly cheaply. This would get more air into the system and also lower EGTS. I have a TST 230/605 lbs #8 plate setup and my boost is upped to 28 lbs WOT now. More fuel needs more air to get the most out of it all. Piers also gives TDR members a discount if you ID yourself when ordering. Try it ,you'll like it! Good luck, Herb:D ;)

Illflem has it right. I am new to the diesel thing, but have experience with turbos. Guessing at the EGT is very foolish.

For what it is worth, your boost is comparable to mine.

Herb, are you talking about the brass elbow (on the turbo) where the wastegate hose connects? I read somewhere the ’95 has a restriction, and the ’96 does not. Mine has no restriction.

Hi,

My original boost elbow was just a straight thru 90 degree brass elbow. The new one is restricted with a side leak built in it to slow up the release of the wastegate. It works real good this way. They sell different ones depending on how much boost max you want at WOT. Have you been in El Dorado long? My grandpa Wheeler lived there till he died a few years ago since 1930. Are you with the Tavern downtown? I know the town well! Herb:D

Herb,

I have been here about 14 years. I am about 1. 5 miles outside of town. I am not connected with Poor Reds.

I will look into the boost elbow.

I see by your signature, you are going to beef up your transmission. It is my intent to go north and have my transmission done after the snow clears next year.

Emerald,

It goes something like this. More fuel equals more horsepower. If you are burning the fuel you have ok, then more wind won't help. If you add more fuel then you need more wind to burn it right. Otherwise LOTS of smoke! If you have move fuel you will see more smoke until the turbo spools up then if you have enuff wind the smoke should be ok. So with a stock 160HP more boost won't help much if any. Sliding the plate forward and blocking the boost elbow will certainly get you more power, but there is a real risk of an EGT problem. Gotta have an EGT gauge before you mess with things.

thanks Joe G. , I think I will hook the wastegate back up, I'm pulling the camper to Atlanta this weekend for the race, dont want to chance burning something up.

The first BOMB gadget you want is an EGT gauge. Then you can probably stay out of trouble no matter what kind of mods you make. I have the combo boost/EGT gauge from Geno's. It works good. I put it in the hole in the dash that is wasted on just haveing the OD lockout switch. I moved that to a custom switch panel that replaced the stock cup spiller.

Get a gauge, my truck will send the EGT up real quick pulling a 6000lb trailer on a good hill, 5 seconds may be to long with the plate forward. With my stock plate forward it went up faster than with a #11 in the center but the #11 gets me more power overall.

I haven't looked at their gauge selection in some time. WOW! When I bought mine there was only one combo gauge. I don't think it really matters which one as long as you have one. From the descriptions in the mag I believe that mine is WM-COMBO-STD-8, the second from the top in the list.
