I have ignored my boost gauge when towing my 5'ver but from some of the post I'm beginning tp realize that knowing what boost represents and how to use it when towing might make towing my 5'ver easier and more enjoyable. I would appreciate it if somebody on this forum could tell me what I'm to look for, what is good or bad for towing!
Thank You
Gary

Towing boost is a variable it can be controled some what if you have a manual transmission...its best to keep your boost high that way the engine can make horsepower
My 2nd gen will blow black smoke at low boost which means I'm over fueling the motor until my boost gets to the 10 psi range then the black smoke is gone

I have on occasion needed to apply throttle to avoid other drivers(as the ones that pull in front of you while towing TT) so I need to pass them to avoid running up the back of their car. Then there is some black smoke at low boost and high fuel.......

Knowing what your are driving might help a bit. 12 or 24 valve? Auto or manual transmission. I limit my boost to 20 while towing even though I can easily push 32. More boost than that does three things. It pushes the turbo speed close to it's map which wears it out faster. The higher the boost the hotter the air temp it is pushing, therefore the additional power is not a linear increase. Lastly, a stockish transmission will fail sooner if pushed beyond it's design input torque. Boost is a direct indicator of torque being produced by the engine.

IIRC, when you push a turbo out of it's 'map', it just heats the charge air more without increasing the mass of the air. that is, the extra heat just increases pressure; it doesn't increase how much air flows into the engine. Staying within the 'map' lets the turbo operate within its 'efficiency band', if you will. It's like a carefully choreographed waltz.

A stock 12V shouldn't get much above 18-20PSI; at least mine never did.

I have a 24 valve 2001-1/2 CTD 2500, DTT heavy duty auto trans with a torque converter lock up switch, Dana 80 4:10 rear end, mild increase on injectors just a little bigger than stock, and my mechanic installed a mild turbo when he said the stock was mediocre at the best but that was about 12 years ago. I bought my Ram new and about a year later I went over to Banks (close to my then home) and had them install the full Banks Kit which included the column gauges. Several years later I started having trouble with the Banks electrical boost (?) that was spliced into my electrical system and a mechanic friend said it was shorting out and would be a continuing problem so he disconnected it and I haven't had that problem since.
