I have 3 pairs of Whites right now 1 pair for wildland fire fighting 1 pair for station boot and one for dress. I wear those girly looking boots every where.
I agree that White's Packer line of boots look girly but I think the reason for the point is for getting your feet in the sturrups easier and kicking horses. The White smokejumper boot below certainly doesn't look very femine.
I stick with Redwings for the most part but the longest lasting pair of boots I ever owned were hiking boots made by an Italian company named Fabiano. I was into doing what I call power hikes for a number of years. These would be 2-4 or 6 hour hikes at a gruelling pace often over nothing but rocks. I wore the Vibram soles down to nothing and they still felt supportive. They look pretty nasty but I still put them on when I am going to be doing something really tough.
15 D's Redwing lace ups on my feet right now. . wear them 180+ days a year. I can not say they are the most comfortable but they work. I work in the oilfield and I would bet that 90% of the boots in the field are redwings. I have a pair of Wolverine Durashocks on order, mostly because they where less expensive and lighter feeling. Well see, work buys a new pair once a year so I can afford to try different shoes out.
Just for my TDR brothers with big feet I will share a secret web site with you... www.oddballshoe.com/bzapp/ If you wear a shoe smaller than 12 don't bother because they will not have your size... how ever if you wear a 20 EEEE have a look because they have 40 shoes to pick from... . happy shopping.
Danner has a good reputation, but is selling that rep out on the cheapies now.
Best to stay with a smaller company. Matterhorn boots did well when I went through SERE. Most times my feet were the only part of me that was warm, dry, and comfortable.
Meindl makes a good boot if you can get them from Germany.
Of course, White is about as good as you will find, if you have the money.
Orvis used to make custom boots that were made to your foot, and had a lifetime warrantee. Very pricey, but might be another options.
Its hard to find boots at a discount, but everything I have bought from Cabelas has been first quality, and a little cheeper then your local outfitters. (plus much better selection)
Another one to try is Gander Mountain they might even have a store in your area.
If I wasn't on the way to the courthouse, I was wearing boots and wranglers (I wore Levis till they cut out contributions to the scouts for not allowing gay leaders--then I switched to wranglers)
we allways raised hay and some kind of critter on the side--cows for a few years then when our daughter got into horses we started raising, training and showing them; wife trained, daughter showed, and I cleaned stalls :>)
I'll put in for another vote for Whites, also in Spokane is Nicks (www.nicksboots.com). Both companies boots are rebuidable for several times. Sure you pay about $350 for the Smokejumper boots but then you rebuild them for about $125 every so often depending on wear. Each rebuild is almost like getting a brand new pair of boots. Rebuilding these boots four times will be the same price or cheaper than Red Wings or some other brand. As an added bonus your feet AND BACK! will be much happier.
steve
Both companies will custom fit your feet for extra$$$.
Outhouses built on small foundations! We say it a little different in Ga Gotta second or third the White's. Mowed through every kind of brand boot and have found that White's are the best. Three year old boots only rebuilt once. The rebuild felt just like new. The only complaint I had was breaking the dang things in, but once they're right man they're right. Cowboy packers 14" top 12D See ya, Jason
Got a pair of Whites Packers, 13E, 12" tops, @ Wall Drug 3 years ago for $150, no else wanted them , so on sale, couldn't believe in my size!!!! Best riding boots, I ever had!!! So far haven't needed the rebuild, so will have to see on that!
